Hello, wondered if anyone knows what over all mark would qualify for an A grade?

All grade boundaries here

Cherryburn · 15/08/2018 16:07

Looking at the grade boundaries, 73-83% would be an A grade. Assuming you’re talking about German as a foreign language and not a first language?

Can't access the site at the moment, think my computer is being temperamental.
My dc did the A-G exam not 9-1, got 79% but it's a B .
Not good enough for A level but I don't know if it's worth a remark?

Are you sure that’s not 79 UMS (which would equate to a B)? 80 UMS would be an A so your DC has just missed out by 1 UMS. I’d say that would be worth a remark.

CarrieErbag · 15/08/2018 16:43

On right, had no idea what ums is?
If that is the case i think we shall go for a remark then, thank you so much for your help.

UMS stands for Uniform Mark Scheme. It’s basically a way to ensure that if the exam proves to be easier/harder than previous years no one is disadvantaged. So 80 UMS would be the cut off for an A every year but the raw marks needed to achieve that grade could be different.

The school should be able to give you the breakdown of marks on each paper once term starts again (they’ll be busy with A Level results over the next few days and usually prioritise them). There’s no rush to request a remark- the deadline is usually mid-late September so there’ll be plenty of time to discuss with your DC’s teacher.

Good luck!

CarrieErbag · 15/08/2018 17:04

Thanks so much Cherry, my dc is home edded, so no school for back up.
Dc has contacted the exam board to ask for clarification so we'll take it from there.
On the piece of paper we received this morning it just said Grade B 79%, so we'll see what happens.
I just hope if we do go for a remark, it doesn't down Confused

Ah right. Well you should be able to get the raw marks for each component of the exam. If one looks lower than expected I’d start there. Bear in mind that there’s a fee for the remark of each component, so it can be a good idea to do them one at a time. Your DC might pick up the extra marks before they’ve all been remarked IYSWIM. Just make sure you don’t run out of time.

He/she would be very unlucky to go down a grade-79 UMS is right at the top of the B grade.

Carrie, if he wanted to study for A Level, I would I'd let one mark shape your decision. The rates of pupils studying German is plummeting in this country, therefore if he in time wanted to take a joint degree at a good university he may find it easier to gain a place. Of course, you should be driven by his strengths, interests and career ambitions.

ReservoirDogs · 16/08/2018 08:52

The % on CIE results are ums scores - they call them ups - uniform percentage scores just to be different and confuse people.

The school will have the raw marks and breakdown so you'll see what they got for each paper and which shoukd go for remark

CarrieErbag · 16/08/2018 10:08

Dc home edded reservoir,
Exam officer at the centre is away until end of August so I have no access to any info.
I might just have to apply for all papers to be remarked?Hmm
