Ecomonics or further matchs for A level?

My DD, currently Y11 and considering doing medicine at the Uni., she couldn't decide whether to take Economics or Further Maths for her A level, as she enjoys and is good at both subjects. She has already chosen Maths, Chemistry, and Biology. Any advice or suggestion would be appreciated! Thanks.

With those 3 core A levels the necessities for medicine are well covered. One could argue that FM provides a more thorough grounding in maths considering how dumbed down the single A level has become. One could also argue that the essay writing in economics provide some balance. Possibly more important than the choice between those two is making sure an eventual application demonstrates some understanding of real word medicine and caring. Some time helping in a care home, giving time to related activities etc.

Many thanks, Roguedad. Your comments/suggestions are very helpful. I absolutely agree with what you said!

You don't actually need maths at all for medicine. I was surprised at this but two of DDs friends are doing medicine and did not do maths A level.
I think the new A level Maths is considered more demanding and the uptake of FM has fallen in many schools.

www.kings.cam.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/subjects/medicine/subject-requirements.html#competitive

Is worth a look as it details what is needed to be competitive about making an application at a top university. It puts maths on an equal footing with biology and physics with chemistry the core compulsory subject.

Are people still doing 4 A-levels then?

pipilangstrumpf · 04/02/2018 22:59

At our school all take 4 ALevels in year 12 but some drop one and only take 3 Alevels.

If you want to study abroad (eg Germany) you actually need 4 Alevels

But to answer the op, I recommend Economics as your dd is already taking Maths.
