I wonder if anyone can help and give any advice on the Musical aptitude test for King David and St. Edwards College? My son is due to take the test this month. On the schools open evening I was told they need to play a piece of music and expect the test to last 15 minutes. Any advice welcome 😊

I'm not sure if your school use the same 60 question aural test but we did a Music Aptitude Test recently for Dame Alice Owens and found these online tests useful preparation. They have some free sample videos online so you can see what the test is like: musicaptitudetest.wordpress.com/

My son took the MAT for St Edwards, 7 years ago now (he didn't get in though - came 100th!). I think it's still the same now as my nephew took it last year and described similar to our experience.
We went in with him for the test. I recall he had to play a piece of his choosing, and then the teacher tested his pitch & tone by playing notes which he had to hum back. Also she played some rhythms and he had to clap them back. I think it was 10-15 minutes tops. They aren't looking for "the most gifted musicians" so being eg. a grade 8 pianist won't necessarily get you a place. They are looking for aptitude.

Did you know that Liverpool College also give 10% of their places on musical aptitude? They run their test separately from the joint St. Eddies / King David / Archbishop Blanch one.

Thank you for your feedback. My son is working towards his grade one and has had practice on rhythm, clapping exercises etc. I'm just worried the piece he wants to play is too advanced for him he's still making mistakes but he is adamant he wants to do it.
I suppose as long as he feels confident that's all that counts on the day 🤞It's so nerve wracking.. for me, not my son he seems fine 😅
