How many hours per subject in secondary?

Question raised by reading another thread and how school are reducing the number of ahours allocated per subjects (due to funding)

How many hours are children supposed to get for each subject? Is there a minimum number or a number of hours that is seen as ideal?

Getting worried about my own dcs, who are in Y7 and Y8 and whether the school will be able to/is coping....

Don't know if it's the same for all schools but DD's list theirs as follows for Y7:

Lesson per fortnight (hours):

Eng 7
Maths 8
Sci 6
RE 4
PE 4
Geog 4
Hist 4
Fre 4
Cp 2
Tech 2
Lit 2
Art 2
Mu 1

Thanks that's a really nice starting point.
I'll have a look at what the dcs are doing from their timetable.

Hmm...
So we have
French. 5
Science 5
Maths 7
English 7
History 3
Geography 2

That's quite a discrepency in some subjects....

DD2, y7. 50 hour long lessons per fortnight:
Maths 6
English 6
Science 5
French 5
History 4
Geography 4
RE 3
Comp Sci 2
Drama 2
Art 2
Music 2
Tech 4
PE 4
+1 somewhere that I've miscounted

TeenAndTween · 08/03/2017 19:16

In y10 & y11, DD had 25hrs/fortnight on 'core' subjects, and 5x5hrs per fortnight on options. Science had 5hrs in core and 5 from options if you did double science. Maths & English each had more than 5hrs / fortnight, increasing in y11 after RE was dropped.

They are unlikely to reduce hours on core subjects, if anything increase due to stronger demands. It will be subjects like tech, art etc that get squeezed.

What about the talks about having 4 days week then? If they do, that's quite a lot of lessons that the children won't have....

I think it's just scaremongering.

LoadingDishwasher · 08/03/2017 21:18

Hmm, per week year 7
English 4
Maths 4
Science 3
History 1
Geography 1
Music 1
Art 1
Spanish 1
French 2
German 2
Then the rest is a mix of food tech, info tech, tech drawing, drama and stuff like that on a rotational basis

Buttercupsandaisies · 08/03/2017 21:40

Ours have 4 X 1 hour per week of English maths RE and science each

Less on other subjects

RedAndYellowPeppers · 09/03/2017 07:44

Bloody hell, the difference is scary TBH.
Especially in science, they don't seem to be doing a lot at my dcs school :(
It's one of favourite subjects too.

DS's is a weekly timetable, lessons are 1 hour. In KS3 it's :-

English 4
Maths 4
Science 4
Spanish 2
Geography 1
History 1
RE 1
Art 1
Music 1
Drama 1
Computing 1
PE 2
Technology 2

It's a state comp. They stream for all of the more traditional core subjects from early in year 7.

DS's school is drastically cutting the hours for "non-academic" subjects next year (PE, Art, DT etc). They are keeping the academic subjects at current level though.

I remember someone asking similar last year so just found this old thread.
