Michaela head: Children are horrible

“You will find in other schools children are not kind at all, they are horrible. And they are horrible because nobody has taught them how to be kind,” Birbalsingh says."

www.theguardian.com/education/2016/dec/30/no-excuses-inside-britains-strictest-school

In an article that slates pretty much everyone else (other teachers = crap, other schools = crap, other kids = crap), it was probably the assertion that kids in other schools are just horrible because they aren't taught kindness that got me most.
On twitter she said that children will tear insects apart without thought to their pain unless taught otherwise. It struck me as a religious position to assert that children are born bad, and indeed she confirmed further on in a discussion that she believes in Original Sin (is she catholic?).

If you know any kids that are kind, by the way, who don't go to her school, then they must have been taught kindness from someone else, maybe a kind aunt or someone.

She also believes that most teachers think that the children know as much as them.

I'm a bit Confused

I've stopped airing my opinion on twitter. Some people I had pretty high opinions of on there do seem to have bought into it, which is fine, but then they are aggressive with anyone who questions it, which is absolutely not fine.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 08/01/2017 14:18

Those essays! I can sense Hemingway spinning in his grave.
The comments above about schools keeping out "inconvenient" Sen kids and eradicating every iota of fun struck a nerve. Whilst not part of the school's mentioned, our school is part of a MAT where this seems to be the unspoken ethos.(referred to by someone as flattened grass management-any little daisies (staff and pupils) that poke their heads up get them chopped off)

Rule number 1. Evil

Thou shalt not question the cult of Michaela.

Obviously anyone that does is a misguided, leftie, progressive teacher who only ever teaches through discovery learning and is condemning children from low income families to a terrible life.

EvilTwins · 08/01/2017 14:36

Grin rafals

As a drama teacher I'm already clearly a leftie prog who does group work and stuff so I may as well not bother having an opinion about anything. Ever. Wink

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 08/01/2017 15:42

It's been quite a novelty having the leftie prog label thrown at me. It's not particularly common given I'm normally far too right wing and trad in any primary ed discussion. . Grin

Talking of cults, I just read on Twitter that Debra Kidd was previously invited to visit, then they read her critical book review and have rescinded the invitation. It seems that only those with wholly positive things to say will be allowed in.

OP posts:
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 18/01/2017 19:48

I thought they'd stopped visits altogether?

noblegiraffe · 18/01/2017 19:53

Nope, Old Andrew visited there today. However his review of the book was wholly positive.

They are allowing 'selected' visitors, which appears to mean those that will tweet nice things and only nice things.

OP posts:
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 18/01/2017 20:56

They did stop them for a while. There was a blog about it (obviously). Something about visitors being rude and treating the kids badly.

I assume Vince Ulam won't be allowed to visit Grin

noblegiraffe · 18/01/2017 21:16

One tweeter says that Michaela lied about something that happened on his visit in their blog post about stopping visits. The suspicion is that they just wanted an excuse to stop undesirables visiting. Confused

It is a shame because Debra raised some interesting questions in her book review and some answers would have been nice.

OP posts:
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 18/01/2017 21:33

I don't think they do answers about interesting questions.

EvilTwins · 18/01/2017 22:57

Just caught up with the storm on Twitter. I am astounded at how bogged down in it people get. I've unfollowed Andrew Old - he comes across as such an arse.

noblegiraffe · 19/01/2017 07:31

He always was like that. I used to have massive rows with him back on TES a decade ago and he was just the same, so it was a bit Confused when he became edu-famous. To be fair, his blog is ok, but he is an arse.

OP posts:
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 19/01/2017 09:28

Yep. I think he's always been an arse. Twitter just brings it to a wider range of people.

He does seem to have lost the plot slightly in this mornings argument about not slagging off a named school when it comes to Michaela.

NWgirls · 19/01/2017 14:57

With reference to the blog link: Trump is not the only one who should not be trusted with a Twitter account.

Teachers armed with Twitter - aiming to become respected thought leaders in the field of education - but ending up in spats that would lead to detention if they happened in a classroom...

At least nuclear wipe-out is unlikely as a consequence of the education debate!

noblegiraffe · 19/01/2017 17:56

It is a bit Shock isn't it? God knows I've had enough petty arguments on the internet, but not under my own name!

Old Andrew was looking for a job on twitter the other week, I can't imagine that a school would look at his output and think 'yeah, this will make our school look good'. Although he is a maths teacher so he could probably tweet photos of his arse and still get a job.

Dangerous idea you are floating thereWink

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 20/01/2017 22:35

OK, I'm confused. Is the person that Debra Kidd is being accused of outing a few years ago OA or someone else?

NotCitrus · 30/01/2017 14:04

Speaking of detention - anyone know any more about this?
