Secondary schools in Kingston/Surbiton

If anyone lives in Kingston/Surbiton borders, can you tell me what you do for secondary school? We seem to only have The Hollyfield as an option but the Ofsted report is pretty damning. I know things can change, but I'm not keen on the fact that girls are in such a minority (I have two daughters) and can't see how that would change.

Does anyone have experience of Hollyfield?

Does anyone know about Tolworth Girls? Is it worth moving to be nearer this school? At the moment, I'm thinking we might have to move area completely. Can't afford North Kingston, unfortunately.

Grey court and Coombe are good, but you would have to move which you indicate is an issue.....

How about looking south at Hinchley Wood? That's good.

Don't know Tolworth I'm afraid...

The latest ofsted for Hollyfield is Good for everything, although that doesn't help with the boy/girl ratio.

Some of the results for Hollyfield look quite good for what is described as a Modern school. 73% of 5 x A - C for instance.

Tolworth girls on the bus seem fine!!

Interesting BerriesandLeaves - I wasn't aware there had been a new Ofsted inspection. Do you have personal experience of Hollyfield by any chance?

Tolworth would require a move as I don't think we'd get in where we are now.

Same with Hinchley Wood.

I taught at Coombe Girls. They loved themselves but it was a dreary and depressing place to work.

The Headmistress does a great job. The other senior leaders are not all well respected.

According to the parents of girls and boys I know, both secondary schools mentioned by you OP (Hollyfield & Tolworth Girls) are very weak academically. The pastoral care was almost non-existent last year at Hollyfield; two of my DS's friends suffered bullying and parents moved them to private schools in year 8 as it did get really bad. The girls from Tolworth Girls I know: one moved to a school in Epsom area and the other girl is still very keen & waiting to move at any of the schools she visited in the neighbouring borough. There are a couple of very good secondary schools in Epsom/Ewell area. Glyn for boys and Rosebery for Girls but I think they have very 'narrow' catchment area?

Oh dear, sounds like nowhere is a good option in the area! Good to know that Hollyfield has improved according to Ofsted, but worrying what you say nicp123 about the lack of pastoral care.

The new Hollyfield head has made great progress. The staff have been great with my child who has just finished with year 11. She had extra maths revision classes after the holidays and on Sundays. She now lives maths so much that she is taking it at A Level. Other teachers have been really helpful as well. We are staying for the Sixth Form. The oldest DS did very well and is now at a very good university.

Hi Kingston parents we went to the opening day for Kingston grammer today and we're all very impressed. I'd love to hear from parents who have their kids there?

iwanttoescape · 30/09/2018 21:28

I don't have a DC at Kingston, but friends do (Yrs 2 & 3). They are very happy with the school. Friendly, down to earth with great pastoral care. Their kids love it. Sport is great - very inclusive.
