WWYD: DD15 "burnt" at school today

Hi All,

DD15 has been left with a burn mark on her leg from another pupil using a lighter to melt some glue (glue stick thing stolen from the science lab) and putting it against her leg today during lunchtime.

DD is in pain from the welt it has left on her leg and looking at it I will be very surprised if it doesn't leave a permanent scar. Same girl tried to do it to several others but they all quickly left the area.

I have rung the school but have had to leave a message for her head of year to call me back, never been in this position so do I just inform her what has happened or should I be making a fuss? I'm not happy with the mark although I don't think it needs any more medical attention than I have given it so far and I am not happy this has happened full stop tbh

How on earth did this happen? Did she sneak up on your daughter or stand there heating it up in front of her?
Can you get a picture as evidence? Get her to write down exactly what happened.

DD didn't realise what was happening until the hot glue was dropped on her leg as she was eating lunch with friends ..... it was only after her incident when they could see the girl with a lighter with the flame onto a glue stick (from what I can understand it is the inside bit of a glue pen they use in science). Girl is in their year but doesn't have any shared lessons with her/different form but obviously during lunch it wouldn't be unusual to see lots of other pupils in the same area. DD didn't tell any teachers etc as she didn't want to snitch or make a fuss. I feel bad as I picked her up today and made her come to the supermarket with me wasting another half hour before I could treat it :(

Even more annoying, I've left it over an hour and just tried to call the school again and the message system now says the school is closed until tomorrow at 8 but I will take a picture now, and tomorrow morning I will drop DD off and go into office to speak to someone!

Take DD with you. Don't drop her first. She can speak her piece then as well before she goes to class.

I think you should definately make a fuss. I would be shocked.

I am not an authority, but surely this is a serious assault and you would be well within your rights to report it to the police.

Your poor, poor DD. It's awful. She must be very upset.

I would inform school, and mostly blame the glue thief.
Is there anything you can do to minimise scarring?

To what extent has your DD already raised merry hell with the person who dropped the hot glue on her? If my Dd would not do that, I would try to pass on my complaint via school.

Teacher here, this is clearly unacceptable. As suggested above take your DD in with you to explain and if it's not taken seriously then involve the police. I hope she is ok

E-mail them a photo and description of what happened and let them know you'll be speaking to them first thing at school. I would kick up a fuss.

I'd report it to the police. I'd also be in the school first thing tomorrow and raising hell about it.

Try Vitamin E cream for the scarring or, if you can get it, a myrrh cream. That is just incredible.

Your DD needs to write an account of what happened, including names of any witnesses as the school will need this for their investigation. She should give this to SLT first thing tomorrow. You could email the school this evening to inform them so they are expecting her and know the background.

I would expect the student to be excluded for a period of time.

The lighter is surely a banned item at school, so the girl needs to be sanctioned heavily for having that in school as well as causing your DD physical harm.

Secondly, your DD needs to 'snitch'. She really must. If this happened at my school, it would be dealt with at the highest level and it would be dealt with by the end of the day tomorrow. Please don't go in all guns blazing at the staff though, remember they know nothing about this, as your DD didn't tell anyone.

Any school worth their salt, will take this very, very seriously! I'm imagining how quickly this girl would be taken out of circulation and her parents called in at my school now. She'd likely have the book thrown at her!

Thanks everyone, I'll ring at 8am en-route to school so they know I'm coming before we arrive and go in with her.

I've taken some photos too and she has given me the name of the girl so I will give them a chance to look into the matter.

DD seems to be ok, pain has subsided although I have warned her it will probably sting when she gets in the shower tonight so cover it with Vaseline. Think it will scar as its a burn, it's not massive but that's not the point is it :(

Quick update: area around burn was a little red and swollen and a nice bruise coming out about the size of a 50p this morning.

Head of her year came and met me in reception of the school and took details from me and then took DD off to do a statement, plus witness statements from some other girls and get the CCTV looked at too.

She has just called back and said after reading through everyones statements and the CCTV footage my DD side of the story adds up and the girl and one other that was there too has been excluded for 2 days.

Thanks for taking the time everyone .... week off school thank goodness so hopefully all will be ok. I've made cake for after dinner and will be helping myself to a large slice and wine

Good. Glad they've been excluded, rather than secluded for 2 days! Hope they realise the severity of it. It could have been much worse.

My ds has a surgery scar, and surgeon said to get rid of the scar(the colour and uneven skin texture) is just keep massaging with oil or lotion after the wound has healed. It may stay there for while, but it will be gone. In a year or 2, you won't even notice it was there.

There might be a scar for a while but I'm sure it will disapper eventually. I had a big burn blister, about 2 inches long on my arm from an industrial oven shelf when I was about 17. No sign of it for a very long time now (admittedly it was eons ago).

Sounds like the school handled it well. Vitamin E oil is really good for scars - she should put it on twice a day for a good few weeks. Aloe vera gel is good too for the healing stage.
