Simple explanation of new GCSE grades

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
We have had school tracker progress report home and it is sadly lacking in explaining the new grading system for the new style GCSE, DS will be in the first year taking these new style exams.

Instead of grades it's now numbers. 1 to 9 where 9 is like an A** and 1 is like a G.

I think that a B equivalent will now be the new 'pass' rate or grade needed to go onto A levels rather than the old C.

Also not all the GCSEs are changing at once. I think they are starting with maths and english

9: high A*
8: low A*/ high A
7: low A / high B
6: mid B
5: low B / high C
4: low C
3: D/ high E
2: E / F
1: F / G

Will the do decimal points later, I wonder? like "5.5" etc.

Thanks to everyone for replying. It's only just really sinking in how little we know about this.

I am mighty peeved that my DS is in the first year of the new system, there are bound to be issues.

In future years you will need a 5 to not have to resit maths and English in sixth form. Because this is a shambles, for the first few years you will not have to resit if you get a 4. Hence the original cohorts will be disadvantaged against those sitting further down the line.

...except for those who don't go to 6th form at all, I suppose.

Most NEETs move on & get employment eventually.
Plenty of holes in the net.
I'm sure that there are lots of paths that people will follow which won't involve resits, even if their X-subject was below Y-threshold, it won't matter.
Some of the NEETs got grades >= 5, too like DS.
