Is there an Educational website for kids besides BBC Bitesize etc..

Hi

can't afford extra tuition and not the brightest myself. My aim is for DS to come home from school and whilst I get food cooking, he can be on the computer in the kitchen doing bits of work....I'll be close to hand to help where I can. Can anyone recommend a good educational website that provides...maybe tasks that can be done online, worksheets??

When I do a search there are loads...some that require payments (dont mind paying small monthly fee if it does the job) others that don't...has anyone already run the gauntlet and found one theyd recommend?

My friend's daughter uses www.q-files.com. It's an online encyclopedia and is free. It doesn't really have any worksheets or tasks but might be helpful as a general reference. I'm not sure how old your DS is but it is for up to about 14 year olds.

Pressed send too soon....completely free! All variety of educational videos and work at all levels.

DS is 14 and is behind a bit at school hence wanting to find a good site that can help bring him up to speed and beyond if possible.

also there is LOADS of good stuff on youtube, particularly for science and languages

I really like education perfect, but you have to pay an annual fee (maybe fifty pounds a year?) and I think it's better for language learning than for other subjects (I am using it to study French atm).

For other subjects, I would second the recommendation for Khan academy (which is free) and I also like "no brain too small" but it is not a UK website and so the curriculum might not be quite right.

You might want to check with his school if he has a subscription for a website, a lot of schools do, particularly for mathematics.

www.my-gcsescience.com contains videos covering different aspects of GCSE science. The site used to be free but there is a now a small charge. My DD used them and liked them.

DS might be interested in explain3d.com which has interactive simulations which can help you to understand how things work. Simulations include: 4 stroke engines, jet engines, lock and key, nuclear power plants and hydroelectric dams.

The various CGP GCSE workbooks and revision guides from Amazon or bookshops are always good value and well worth getting.
