Year 6 Sat grades - what class would you expect?

Ds worked hard to get sat results 5 in all 3 subjects, being told by his primary teacher he would be in the top set at high school. His high school seem to have streamed form classes and then further streamed english and maths. In his form class he is in the middle set and is disappointed after working so hard.

Is gaining 5's just average and the norm in year 6 then?

"Middle ability - agree in an ideal world but top set has limited spaces. The alternative is to make a smaller top set to allow room for middle to move up. Tbh a lot of it is perception - v similar work is done in both."

Surely if similar work is done in both sets then it would not matter if a bright but very lazy child got moved down a set. My son's school is very different. A child has to produce the results to avoid going down sets. They do not take into account key stage 2 results or CATs. Children who are underachieving are given support, but they do lose their place in the top sets. OFSTED doesn't seem to mind to much as the school has good results results.

"I found this very interesting link "

Well given the class-warrior BS it certainly helps explain why the IoE didn't get their play school.

Interesting article Precious - my ds' teacher said after he'd done his sats he should have put him in for level 6

this is the last year of level 6 SATS. our school may not even bother doing them this year. they were sounding out those of us with likely candidates to see what we thought. i said if they were doing level 6s i would hope dd would be selected and i would support them in whatever extra work was required but if not then that is fine with me.

to answer your question though last year 75% of our year 6 got level 5s or above. so a good level 5 in the local secondaries would be middle set.

LaQueenIsKickingThroughLeaves my DD school is exactly the same (makes me wonder if it is the same school does it begin with R?)
