Birmingham grammars - is your kid at one?

DS is only in year 3 so I'm probably thinking about this prematurely, but anyway.

If his personality continues to develop as it currently is, I think grammar school would be his best bet.
He's a bit of a geek, bookish and very keen to learn. He's in top groups for everything and those (faintly ridiculous) "G&T" words tend to be spoken about him. He also happens to be quite little, and I worry about him getting bullied at the big (slightly rough, I'm told) local comp.

So, how do I give him the best chance at getting into a grammar? Am I right that it's pretty tough in Brum? If your child's in a Birmingham grammar, how did your child prepare (honestly)? Do I have to start thinking about it now? I can't afford a tutor, but could download resources and do extra work with him if that's what people do. But I have no idea where to start. At the moment, we do nothing academic outside school at all (although he picks out lots of fiction and fact books at the library and reads them himself).

Many thanks in advance.

Thank you - that is extremely useful. Really appreciate it.

Out of interest do people really write ungenuine posts about such a tedious topic?! Yes am genuine by the way. Smile

Many thanks again for the reply.

Well ds is due to take 11+ next month. Have seen KEFW which in his words was awesome and I loved too. It Is such a journey however. Have also sent KECHB and found it underwhelming if I'm honest but we are stl so undecided. Ds has had some tuition but not intensive. He has HFA too to add to the mix so all depends on score and hoe he feels about the schools we visit in Sept. Lots of variables really Confused
