My dd goes to a secondary school and is in year 8. Last year they gave her a report and for maths it said that she got a 6c and she was very happy about that. However when she went back to school and they put the kids in sets and she was put in the bottom set for maths. Can you please help me to improve her grades and maybe if I need to talk to the school.

Is it a selective school or is it possible there has been an error? Phone up and ask the school why she is in that set and what she needs to do to move up.

How many sets are there? "Bottom" set of two with a 6c might be possible. If there are 6/7/8 sets, it sounds wrong. Can you email the teacher and ask if there has been an error?

do you have the data on all the other kids to compare?

HibiscusIsland · 06/09/2014 10:04

Unlikely, but if it's a comp she can compare to the national average. Is it selective op?

How many sets are there?

Could you contact the school in a friendly manner to ask for clarification? It might not be the bottom set, it might just have a number that makes it sound like the bottom, but is one of several same ability groups. If it is confirmed to be the bottom set, you could ask how she is doing in her maths and if there is anything more you could be doing to support her. It's better to speak to the school and find out for sure if you are concerned.

What sort of school is it? Selective? My DS has just gone into y8 and is a 7B for maths-he's in the top set. 6c is conceivably the bottom set?

I think the easiest thing to do is to ask the teacher. I wouldn't be shy about saying, my daughter finished year 7 with a 6c, we thought this was good. Now we understand that she is in the bottom set and are confused.

Depends on how the setting works too. In DD's school they are banded not set - so half are in top sets and half in lower sets. DD has just gone into Y8 with 7C in Maths and is in top band, but there are plenty with higher levels than that and the lower band probably starts at 5A/6C. As others have pointed out, only thing to do is ask.
Also the name of the set isn't the issue so much as whether the work is at the right level and pace for your child.
