I saw a thread for boys but decided to make this one for girls. DD1 starts secondary in September. She isnt fussy about brands and styles etc. She just wants to stay clear of any messenger style bags and anything 'girly'.
Also, this style is just a no:

Hello, this thread is a little old now and some of the links are out of date. Take a look at this handy page for a round up of the best backpacks, chosen by Mumsnetters.

My 2 girls have one from Ratchet and one from Animal

The Animal one has more room, the Ratchet one is deemed "cooler" - both are zipped at the top and have padded adjustable straps - the Anna Smith type bags are not zipped and get opened and stuff taken whilst kids are walking around, they also do not have padding - which is ok if all your books are kept at school, but on a heavy book day it is Hell... (my girls both started Y7 with them - Owls and butterflies were "in" - and soon regretted it)

I care about trying to prevent my daughter suffering from back pain. DS1 (Y9) and DS2 (Y7) have to carry very heavy loads, especially when they need rugby kit, clarinet, heavy textbooks etc. After trying various bags, they eventually settled on the ones that didn't hurt their backs/shoulders. Hopefully DD will be as sensible when her time comes next year.

DD started school with a Gola bag and only lasted a couple of weeks. The volume of stuff she was carrying made it very uncomfortable.

Now she has a rucksack like this but in red.

Thanks all. I am gonna follow the Hulababy rule! The only reason I said no to the first bag was since DDs folders wouldn't fit in it. Had a look around paperchase a few days ago. Any more recommendations?

Surfdome was amazing! Thank you. So many ranges! DD is having a look right now and has picked out a few that are sensible and stylish. Never thought shopping for a school bag would be this hard!
