I would ask the head of your prep school for recommendations. Lots of boys move at 13 and not 11, so you need to have a conversation quickly about applying if you are talking about a place for September.

If you want to try for entry in Sept 2014 you need to get your skates on.

Many schools entrance exams are in January and some schools will have already held theirs in November and December.

The deadlines for applications may well have passed.

Sorry I meant he will be moving in secondary school at 13. Already had a chat with headmaster, everywhere he has recommended is miles away and my son would have to board. I would like a day school. X

Any advice on preparing children for common entry exams would be great, I really don't have a clue, how it works.

Did your headmaster not suggest Hampton? That can't be all that far away if you're looking at Windsor/Ascot, and it's a day school.

My recollection from my DS is that there aren't a huge number of day schools around that area - I remember the anxiety about getting her DS into Hampton for that precise reason, as she was dead set against boarding and, because her DS was in a prep school till 13, the chances of getting into one of the local grammars would have depended on a vacancy cropping up in Year 9. Fortunately, it worked out for her... I have no clue about preparing kids for CE, but if I had a child in a prep school I'd expect them to be able to give me chapter and verse until I felt totally on top of the subject. Happily, however, MN is a mine of information, though possibly you might find that people aren't really checking in for a few days. You might need to bump your post in a few days' time. xx

Berkshire sadly has very few private boys day schools. Most boys I know start of travelling quite a distance as day boys and end up choosing to board due to the travelling.

Would you be able to move at all?
