My dd2's deputy head phoned yesterday to tell me they'd identified her as Gifted and Talented and would be flagging her up to her new secondary school from September. It's largely for her literacy work.

She did do very well in her SATs (all 5s) and I know she has a flair for writing, but I wondered what it actually means, to be classified as a G&T child?

Should I be doing anything extra with her during the hols? Will she have 'special needs' type provision at secondary school?

Thanks Snorkel, a very interesting article. I'll speak to the school and see what it means from their perspective.

My son was identified as gifted and talented by his primary school (Expected to gain all level 5's in his KS 2 SAT's) and thereby was selected to attend a summer school run by the secondary school he will attend in Sept.It was a fantastic experience for him;not only were they challenged intellectually (it was science orientated)but they had a fantastic time doing all sorts of activities and he also had the opportunity to meet other children that will attend his new school and to spend time in his new school before the masses arrive in Sept!I assume that the school who had received funding for the week, were able to identify the G & T children prior to the beg of the Autumn term so that their progress could be monitored. I felt that he was very lucky to have this opportunity. The school it has to be said also ran a course for those lacking in confidence and self esteem which I thought was a perhaps even more wonderful idea!I know several children who attended that course and who now see going to secondary school as a positive experience and not a terrifying one!!
