Oundle? Well regarded and academic. Oakham maybe slightly less academic and significantly less full boarders but still very well regarded. Ampleforth if you don't mind the RC thing less academic but we've friends with children there and all are or have done very well (medicine etc) and most importantly better than predicted. Good on pastoral care.
There another recent posting about a similar things on MN lots of schools recommended and there feature discussed also about boarding in general.

Bromsgrove; go and look. It was not on my list but was oat the top after I visited

Was also going to suggest Oakham, Oundle or maybe Repton - not sure of boarding numbers though.

Sharpkat · 21/08/2012 19:54

Oakham whilst not out and out academic given the numbers per year is very supportive of academic students. It is a school that produces very well rounded individuals. Cannot remember what exactly the good schools guide says about it but could not have put it better myself.

I am biased as an old Oakhamian but it is a fantastic school and I did very well academically there.

I don't know about the sixth form but my cousin's children go here and I know he really rates it (day pupils)

Thank you everyone. Oakham seems to come up again and again. Does anyone know how girls get on at Shrewsbury ??

Wingshoes Shrewsbury not taken girls for long, I believe though well
Facilities are impressive
Town is pleasant
Fees are high...

happygardening · 22/08/2012 09:04

Fees for Shrewsbury and Oakham are actually under £10 000 per term thats actually less than many. £11 000+ is now becoming increasingly common!
