Hello, starting ti prepare my DS (Year 5) for entrance exams next year (doing it ourselves right now!). Probaby goint to try the usual suspects, Hampton, Emanuel...Have not been to Latymer's open day and they are somehow vague about the entrance exam. VR and NVR? Multiple choice? Will there be creative writing? Could anyone with recent experience give us some information? Thanks!

Hi

Don't mean to be "difficult" but ask the school specifically. Either they were just a bit vague at the open day or hey are "deliberately vague" because they change the formal every year in order to stop kids being "taught to the test" and want kids who can think on their feet.

Anecdotal experience on a forum is helpful but get the gospel truth from the school (and past paper if you can).

!!= locally we knew was VR and NVR in a "colour the square in pencil" MCQ format but we never knew what likely topics were as they kept everything very secret deliberately. When my eldest sat the exam they have to put names to countries round the back sea (?)for instance - she had no idea - however I think very few other did and it was there as a "if you don't know the answer move on and guess later" question to see if kids could cope with the strategy IYSWIM

You're right, they are vague on the website. I believe they have VR and NVR as well as the usual English and Maths. I've just seen their sample papers for these, and they are definitely on the hard side. In quite a big way.

Thank you! Could not attend the open day as you have to register and they won't let you do that till DS is in Yr6. I find that very limiting, it is in Yr5 parents strat thinking of what's next, is it not?

Suprised you couldn't attend the open evening, my friend took her daughter who is in yr 5. They were given some sample papers and told they would have to pass a nvr test before they then continued to take a Maths and English paper.

I think that's Latymer in Edmonton as opposed to Latymer Upper in Hammersmith - cause of much confusion. Latymer Upper definitely won't let you visit till Y6.

If the website info was vague - try eleven plus forum - someone will have all the info there. It's a really useful resource.

Website says 'written examination ... covers English, Maths and Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning'
Can't attend until Y6 as they are so popular and oversubscribed...even with Y6 kids & parents only, approx. 600 people attend each open day.

My ds started there in September. I'm afraid I don't have any words of wisdom on the exam (except he came out saying he thought it could have gone better!). However, when you register they send you a sample paper and I don't remember there being anything particularly unusual in it.

Good luck!

What year would be most appropriate for tutoring a child for the 11+ exam.
