Y7 Maths - workbooks at home

DS seems to be struggling with maths and getting a bit left behind. The school won't discuss this until half term so we want to support him at home until then. Has anyone used any workbooks at home for a weaker maths student and found them particularly good/appealing?

missing - they have only been at school for a couple of weeks! I have no idea whether DS (also Y7) is keeping up or getting behind, it's just too early - although that having said he romped through his HW (on the my maths website) at the weekend, it was basically trivial for him (once he'd worked out how to use the website that is - hence my presence :) ). I don't know if this means he is doing ok or has been (wrongly) pegged as having issues due to (mild) SEN. We shall see. But it's too early to start worrying yet, I'm sure. For all our DCs in Y7.

We live in an area where the state system runs middle schools so he has been at this school for 2 years already and has slipped a set every year from the top in year 5 to the third this year. That is why I am concerned. I ama aware that this would in a regular system be his first year at secondary and I think the sooner we can sort out where he is struggling the better.

Perhaps worthwhile to take him to an assessment centre to find out what his weak areas are. A friend of mine had this done over the summer due to her DS' lack of progress in year 6. I think the cost was in the region of £50 for both maths & eng. together and took just over 2.5 hrs.

My son is also year 7 and we use the CGP books. They have revision guides and workbooks that explain things really easily. Each page in the revision guide is linked to a page in the workbook so they can work steadily through the topics and you can see how they are doing.

Is he struggling because they haven't been set yet? I'm currently teaching mixed ability until we set at half term and it is impossible to teach students who didn't get a level in the SATs and ones who got high level 5s at the same time without occasionally boring the brighter ones or losing the weaker ones.

It'll be a lot better once they're set.

He got a 4a and was targetted 5c, which I know isn't bad but considering that at the end of year 4 he was towards the top of the top set, it is more concerning. They have streamed them by ability. I did see the CGP books and they seemes to have been well-reviewed on Amazon. Everything just looks so dry though! Am currently online looking at BBC bitesize which seems a bit more interesting.

Is the school signed up to the SAM learning site. www. samlearning.com. Theres lots of really good stuff on here for all subjects. Both DSs (yr7 and Y10) use this. DS1 in particular for maths as its probably one of his weaker subjects.
