Opinions on King's School, Worcester

Hi there
Just starting to think about secondary options for my DD (currently in state primary which we are very happy with). I have concerns about the local state secondary - v. good school but large class sizes are giving me serious worries particularly for my DD, and so have just started looking at the possibility of private. My DH and I were both very well educated at state level so this is a big departure for us, and we feel a bit all at sea about the whole thing. However, we are trying to be open minded and Kings seems at the moment to be an option.

We are definitely looking for a co-ed as my DS will follow my DD one academic year behind and I don't want to separate them for various reasons. I suppose I would like to know of anyones opinion of this school, and also whether you would have a better chance of getting a place if you went earlier to one of the prep schools attached?

All information would be very greatly received!
TIA

Hi,

My DS1 started at RGS Worcester last Sept in Y7. We only applied for RGS due to a family history of attending but a number of DS1's year did both entrance exams for RGS and Kings and then made a choice based on preference and exam results.

DS1 attended a state primary and had no tutoring for the exam apart from practice papers on non verbal reasoning which they don't cover in his state school.

I have family who are currently attending the prep school and they will be offered a place at the school based, I believe, on ongoing assessments. If the school does not think the child will be able to get to the level required then the parents are apparently advised in enough time to apply to other secondary schools.

We're half way through Y7 now and my DS1 is really enjoying school. The amount of homework was a bit of a shock to start with but he is holding his own and getting good results.

Hope this helps and good luck with your decision. I assume you will be attending the various open mornings the schools hold.

Thanks, MRSJWRTWR. That's really helpful, particularly the bit about the prep school. Glad to hear your DS1 is enjoying school - that's more than half the battle I reckon!
