Just taken out a family membership to NTS to get us out more and looking for ideas for day or weekend trips, starting from Glasgow. Specifically for places that a ten year old boy might enjoy. Castles are obviously a big part of NTS but I do find that after a bit they can end up samey so looking for places that offer something a bit different. Where has your family enjoyed?

Maybe a bit too far for you, but Crathes Castle has lovely gardens. (Not sure what they're like at this time of year, but there's good topiary and a woodland area that a boy might find interesting?)

The last time I was there, you couldn't just go straight to the gardens. You now have to go up to admissions to get a pass/token for the gardens. (Still free of charge for NTS members.)

There's good parking - free for NTS members.

Have just found out about the nature trails.

Lindisfarne is special.
You could also look at English Heritage for more places to visit.

Not NTS but the ferry from Ayr to Arran is a nice day trip.

Culzean Castle in Ayrshire is great! Amazing adventure playground, lovely house, can go down the cliff path to the beach which has a cave - fabulous full day out.

Holmwood House in Glasgow will have kids events on, though some for younger ones.

Check out the events, there will be Halloween and Christmas things coming up in various NTS places

We went to the House of Dun up in Montrose area recently and the guided tour was one of the best we’ve ever done.
