Divorce pre 2006

I’ve tried internet searching but I’m not sure I’m getting the info I’m looking for.

My parents divorced pre the 2006 changes.

Can someone please explain how divorced in Scotland worked back then? ie how long you had to be separated, did there have to be reasons etc. how long did it actually take to be officially divorced.

It’s not really that interesting, but to fill you in - I’m trying to reconcile in my own head the differing accounts, and now sadly I’ve only one parent to ask, and they’ve a tendency to re-write history.

Thank you

Divorced around 1996
2 years if both agreed
5 years if one party didn't agree

Didn't apply if there was adultery or unreasonable behaviour.

Thank you @OllyBJolly

If you don’t mind me asking - did you go down the 2 years mutual agreement route? Did you have to prove you actually separated at a particular date?

And then once the 2 years was up how long before you were officially divorced?

Presumably unreasonable behavior/ adultery meant one party had to take the ‘blame’ but divorce could be achieved much more quickly?

Ha - we waited the 5 years. He didn't want to divorce as 1. he was Catholic, and 2. wanted to have a reason not to marry his GF. I had enough on my plate with 2 under threes and a new job.

I can't remember how we agreed on the date. Yes, I think it could have been very quick if we had gone for adultery.

5 years on the dot I got a letter from his lawyers filing for the divorce! I think it took a month for the decree nisi to come through - very quick. Thought I'd moved on when that happened but remember crying my eyes out when I read it.

Oh sweetie I’m sorry, I’m sure you’ll well over it now, hope I haven’t dredged up painful memories.

But he wasn’t enough of a catholic not to stray 🙄what a dick and sounds as if you were well shot, painful nonetheless.
