Are there any threads about the bomb threats made to Scottish schools?

Lots on Facebook but can’t see anything here. Are teachers going in? And parents sending kids to school tomorrow?

YouBelongWithMe · 19/10/2026 19:57

Business as usual in Edinburgh tomorrow. Kids and staff expected in the buildings.

heymammy · 19/10/2026 20:03

School sent an email to parents saying it's being considered a hoax. Honestly, if not for that email I would have known nothing about it so it's business as usual here.

I still haven't looked up what's happened tbh, don't use regular social media and the telly's been off.

hobbledyhoy · 19/10/2026 20:12

@Rubberbandz I see your post has rightly been deleted.

The email purports to be from an Islamist extremist group, that doesn’t mean it is.

It could be from other groups that want to sow division or generate fear and hatred of Muslims for their own political agenda - et voila. You’re either walking straight into the trap or setting one.

The police issued a statement hours ago stating they didn’t believe this was a credible threat but that doesn’t appear to stop wild speculation or people using it as an excuse to write shite online.

When I was in a large Edinburgh secondary in the 80s we got bomb hoaxes quite regularly, although phoned in rather than email, obviously. We all trooped out into the playground for half an hour then back in.

Police Scotland have been pretty clear this is a definite hoax given the number of schools who received the email in Scotland and N Ireland. Cannot believe the number of parents who kept their kids off yesterday too.

I was totally bewildered by this too! I grew up in the states and went to a Jewish high school so we had bomb threats regularly. So I'm sure that's clouding my view here as that probably shouldn't be normalised.

I saw somewhere that 20% of kids weren't in yesterday??

KassandraOfSparta · 21/10/2026 09:48

Yes, https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c6z7xrgvzr0jo has the stats, "Glasgow City Council said that some of their schools had 50% fewer pupils than normal."

Absolutely ridiculous.

School attendance drops across Scotland after bomb hoax

Some parents said they had not taken their children to school because they were too worried.

Ds wasn't in school yesterday because we thought it was also an in-service day! But he's in today as usual.

We also had a good few bomb threats phoned in to our school in the 80s in the west of Scotland. We all had to leave the main building and go outside. 10 minutes while I suppose the janitor looked in the rubbish bins maybe? I don't remember the police or firemen ever coming. Then all back inside.

I'm joking about my experience but I know it's a very real fear for many families in war zones, and indeed many Jewish families in the UK right now. I know it's not funny.

There was a bomb threat specific to my nephew's school a few years back. I remember being so angry that someone would upset kids and families like that but then had to remind myself how often it happens for real in other parts of the world every day.

JackJarvisEsq · 21/10/2026 11:32

im not surprised in the least at the ones DD has named that were off yesterday. Well actually they were pulled out on Monday during the day and didn’t return

it’s the ones who are off with alarming regularity. The parents are claiming it’s because they care more about their kids than those who have sent them in but clearly that care doesn’t extend to making sure they are educated

KassandraOfSparta · 21/10/2026 11:35

I think anyone with half a brain can see that there is a clear difference to a specific, targeted threat which absolutely should be taken seriously, and a mass hoax email to 300 schools in Scotland and another 300 in Northern Ireland.

Orangerowanberries · 21/10/2026 13:03

Some areas are on their October holidays so not in anyway but still received the threats.

The thing is, half of the population is below average intelligence and loads of folk believe anything they read on social media. Still a fair proportion of kids off our school today. I don’t understand the mentality, are they going to keep them off forever?

SayDoWhatNow · 22/10/2026 10:15

I was really annoyed about this - my kid's nursery actually sent a really alarmist message saying everyone needed to collect their children right away.

The preschool nursery my other child attends sent a calm, reassuring message that it was a hoax and not to worry.

It's surprising how the same situation created such a different response in different organisations.

It’s like Covid all over again…. Not until it’s SAFE

Covid also taught them that it is fine for children to miss school for months at a time…

Greengreengrassofhere · 22/10/2026 12:40

How could a terrorist plant so many bombs at the same time? Surely that’s what makes it obvious that this is a blatant hoax?

I do agree with this. The message received from her on high on her wee podium was that education didn't really matter.

Did we go to the same school? Random bomb threats from “the IRA”. Aye, the IRA defo planned to bomb a Catholic primary school in Drumchapel

And then they back this up further by simply not giving a damn about attendance. Skip one day a week cause you can’t be arsed to take your kid to school would mean big fines in England. Here they turn a blind eye.
