West End to Denniston help!

Can anyone help with a west end or nice hotel with easy access to Denniston?
My DS has just moved up and we are doing a quick October visit.
We are flying to Glasgow so looking for easy access to Denniston where he lives but in a nice central place so we can treat him to a few good meals ( he’s vegan).
He says theres a subway that’s 15 minutes from him but I’m lost really.

Not many hotels in the west end really, the Hilton grosvenor on byres road would be close to a subway station. I think he must be a fast walker if he says it’s 15 minutes between Dennistoun and the nearest subway station!

Ah ok. He is ( 21 and lanky). I’ve never been to Glasgow so no idea what works for a few nights.

There's a lot more choice in the city centre. It depends on what sort of money you want to spend. E.g. the Blythswood is nice but ££££. Or there's a Premier Inn in the Merchant City which would be walkable to Dennistoun

No advicecaboutba hotel but there are a few really good vegan restaurants in Glasgow.
Stereo us close to Glasgow Central Station and Buchanan Street Subway.

In the West End, Grovesnor is a popular hotel and near the Uni (used to be a Hilton hotel). Lots of coffee shops, restaurants, bars and interesting shops, botanic gardens, Kelvingrove Park, Kelvingrove Art Gallery. There's a subway to take you into town and frequent buses also.

How big does Glasgow feel in relation to other places? I mean I know there will be more suburban areas but is their an equivalent sized city ( in terms of feels rather than population or density )?

Glasgow has distinct areas where there's a small scene in each. If you're visiting for a few days you'd get to know the West End, it's the most affluent part of the city, vibrant with green spaces and lots of choice for places to eat, lovely small cinema . City Centre is a bit of a mess at the moment, it's been dug up to create bike lanes and there was a major fire next to the station.

Sorry that doesn't really answer your question! I can't really liken it to anywhere else.... it doesn't feel densely packed! I think because each area has it's own different identity and there's a lot of parks for a big city

Though Leeds maybe a bit posher these days, Glasgows not looking great.
Id probably stay somewhere in the merchant city like social hub in your shoes. Easy access to merchant city restaurants (several nice Indian restaurants with good vegan options), walkable 15 mins for son along duke st back to Denniston, 5 mins to st Enoch subway to go to west end.

There's a premier inn just off George square in the city centre. From there you can bus or train to Dennistoun ( or its about a 20-30 min walk).

City centre means your son can easily come in to meet you and from there you can stay in city or train/subway/bus to the West end if you want.

I wouldn't bother staying west end if you're just in for a quick visit, it's far far away from Dennistoun.

Do you want to visit the west end specifically? It's a bit of a trek to the Dennistoun (east end).

Lots of good vegan options in Glasgow!

I wouldn’t stay in the west end tbh as it’s a hassle to get over to Dennistoun. And there aren’t really many hotels.

Look at Native Glasgow, it’s really nice and you can get a place with a wee kitchen so he could come over.

The Social Hub is handy and has a bar and restaurant but I think rooms are a bit small for any length of stay, unless you get a good deal. The Fraser Suites are also a good bet.

All of these are walkable from where you get the bus in from the airport. The city centre and merchant city is easily walked around. West End more of a schlep but worth a wander.

Lots of choice for vegan food. Ka Pao is great, get the fried chicken if you’re not vegan! And a vegan friend rates Sylvan. These are both west end but dennistoun and the city centre have loads of places to eat

That’s amazingly helpful thank you all. I know the west end is nice but I didn’t think there was also a bit in the middle ( sort of assumed east west just met up) . I hadn’t considered there was a central area as somewhere to stay , although there were some comments about how run down the central area was on another thread?
But I shall check out the hotels as I think that would work.

@TheBers So Glasgow is the 3rd largest city in the UK after London and Birmingham.

It also has roughly the same population density as Birmingham.

Manchester has a (supposedly) larger contiguous area but this includes towns that are clearly in Lancashire like Bolton.

Take the ‘run down’ comments with a pinch of salt, there’s an area close to the railway station that’s a bit of a hub for anti-social behaviour, similar to what you would see at gare-du-nord and Manchester Piccadilly.

It’s easily avoided and if you’re not a young male, drug addict or lone vulnerable young female you would be extremely unlikely to come into conflict with any of these people anyway.

There are loads of good hotels around the city centre.

Denniston is also about an 8 minute train. Journey to the west end if you prefer to stay there.

So the George Carlton appeared as a good hotel but by the station.

@Sulgari Yes Native Glasgow looks great too.
Social Hub seems perfect but the rooms seem small.
This is taking the place of our normal half term trip to France so DH will want something “nice”. We are prepared to take a hit on the weather!

There is the Cathedral Square Hotel which is walkable from Denniston or a Moxy hotel at the High Street, next to the Merchant City. Both are 5-10 min walk to city centre subway and train station to go to West End, or High St Station can take the overland train up to Denniston, depending on which station suits. That part of High St has a lot of tourists, students and the occasional interesting character!

I find Glasgow feels huge, it is a big city.

My DS lives there. It can take us 45 minutes to travel from the southside to the west end.

I once booked the Raddison Red, beside the Hydro, thinking we were half way between Shawlands and the West End and that we would be able to walk between the two….

Not surprisingly, we didn’t.

We have started to rent an Airbnb, near to him if we can, but if we want west end, an apartment with two bedrooms and he comes and stays too.

The Piping Centre is a great place to stay in. Very central and lovely accommodation.

There are two train stations in Glasgow city centre. The fire was at Central Station and this hotel is at Queen Street Station.

I would definitely stay in the city centre.
AC by Marriott is just off George square and is also handy for anyone coming from the east end.
