East Neuk holiday suggestions

Looking for recommendations of must do/see/eat for East Neuk in the spring 🙏No kids.

There’s lots to do but it depends on your interests. Do you have accommodation booked yet, and when exactly are you going - there are some things that don’t reopen till a bit later in Spring).

Visit Bowhouse. If the market is on then that is fab. If not the cafe there is amazing and there are a couple of nice wee shops. Obviously Anstruther for fish and chips. St Andrews is wonderful for shops, eating, beach and history.

Looking at Crail or Pittenweem for April

I like immersing myself in an area so lots of walking about

It's a couple of years since I've been, but my recommendations: Go to Crail, Pittenweem, Anstruther, Elie. Eat some seafood, visit the Chocolate Tree in Pittenweem and the Harbour cafe in Crail. All the villages are small enough to see everything they've got to offer. Walk the coastal path. Have a day in St Andrews. Bowhouse too as PP mentioned.

Tentsmuir Forest's not too far away.

I once saw a painting of Cellardyke in a local exhibition and I can still (almost) remember it. It was before the days of the internet (and me having any money to buy it) so I couldn't hunt down the artist or painting. I have tried since. It was gorgeous. Every time I hear the name Cellardyke I think of that painting. I hope whoever bought it is still enjoying as much as I would have 😄

Do not eat an ice cream cone when walking down the street in St Andrews. The seagulls are savage. Go to The Wee Chippy in Anstruther instead of the Anstruther fish bar. Do a boat trip out to the May Isle from Anstruther.

Do the Pilgrim Trail and visit all the caves.

Bowhouse Market is usually the second weekend of the month so try and time your visit for that because it’s great (I’m going tomorrow😊).

Can absolutely recommend East Neuk outdoors. Lots of really good water, sports and other activities and the staff are amazing.

Walk the nice bits of the Fife Coastal Path.

Scotlands Secret Bunker is worth a visit. The East Neuk is a great place for chilling out in and doing very little.

Now I love my chips 😁 so that’s an interesting suggestion. I did have the famous one in my list!

It’s interesting you say the nice bits - are there sections that aren’t so good or to be avoided?

If you like outside swimming then there’s 3 tidal pools - Pittenweem, Cellardyke and St Monans

I live in the East Neuk. Definitely the Wee Chippy over the Anstruther Fish Bar, it’s much better and the queues are much shorter. For a nice meal the Dory in Pittenweem and The Shoregate in Crail are both excellent, you’ll need to book. The Cocoa Tree in Pittenweem does an amazing BLT roll and great spicy bean soup, as well as hot chocolate and (expensive) chocolates. There is a regular bus along the whole East Neuk (the 95 or “the Dolly Parton) which is useful if you’re eating out since taxis are as rare as hen’s teeth.

The coastal path is generally very nice, Kingsbarns to St Andrews is hard going. Lower Largo to Elie is particularly pretty but it’s all scenic. You do have to dodge golf balls in places.
