Where are all the summer jobs

My child has just finished S6, starts at Glasgow doing computing after the summer. We live in Edinburgh. She’s looking high and low for a summer job. As are her friends and their siblings. Nothing to be found. At all. Even in the festival period. Is there really nothing out there? Surely the festival needs staff willing to work the 5 week (or whatever) period? Surely having had the hassle of the festival visitors we should have the upside in lots of summer jobs for local students?

If anyone has been successful where have you been looking?

Where has she been looking? Gilded Balloon and Assembly Rooms have multiple roles to apply to on their websites.

Have you tried putting “fringe” in the search and setting the location to Edinburgh on Indeed? I just tried it and got a fair number of results including flyering and bar work.

Bothe my boys not in your area have multiple jobs, so my youngest 19 is working at a care home and doing dishes in a pub, the eldest finished night shifts and is now doing day work landscaping. All of these are jobs people don’t really want I guess so I’ve found with my two they have never been out of part time work between uni etc, as they have done the weekends, nights and jobs most parents can’t do? The Care industry is shouting out for support and workers and will train as well.

maybe suggest weekend evening and care home work? Or cleaning.

How long has she been looking for? Generally the summer jobs are looking for people from beginning of June so recruiting in May.

My DC emails local pubs and restaurants in May while still away at uni and then follows up a couple weeks later by dropping in to speak to the manager once home. Managed to get a restaurant and bar job last 2 summers that way.

Theres also catering agencies that do weddings and events over the summer that have loads of students working for them. It’s a long day and hard work but the money is good

What specifically is she doing to look for jobs? Is this all online or in person? I think that the summer economy is still very much “in-person” when it comes to job hunting. Just walk into every pub/restaurant, try to be as cheery and natural as possible, with a short CV (and a photo attached to remember her by). These places often have a high turnover of staff so even if no positions are available now, they may be shortly, either when tourists start flocking and/or someone leaves.

I think that @rivalsbingeabove has some fold
ideas too.

I waa in the city centre last weekend and there were plenty of jobs advertised in cafes, restaurants and small shops' windows. It does require walking around and speaking to people though.

Jumbaree · 06/07/2026 08:14

There is nothing in the windows of the hospitality businesses near us. She probably needs to walk in and ask. Thanks for the guilded balloon tip!

My son works in events. Everything has already started and recruitment was months ago. I also think that in this economy there are more people who work the summer at events and then take the winter off, so return every year to the fringe etc.

HushTheNoise · 06/07/2026 09:37

There were loads of jobs for the fringe/ tattoo etc but advertised back in May/ early June. Have a look on creative Scotland website. As others have said, get a bunch of printed cvs, walk round hospitality places. Get a name of the manager, write it down and follow up the next day by phone if possible or email. Exams finish mid May, lots of others will have started jobs then. It does maybe feel overwhelming coming straight from exams to working but they will probably need to start earning for the coming year at uni. Next year, maybe just start a bit earlier. Or they may get something they can return to next year which would be great. Good luck, mine spent a day walking round and got one in a local pub which is ideal. None of the ones applied to on indeed even got back to her.

Meeplemakeglasgow · 06/07/2026 14:43

One of mine has always been able to get bar/restaurant work through a Facebook group, think it’s called ‘Glasgow Bartenders’ or ‘Glasgow Hospitality’.

Realise you’re in Edinburgh but would be shocked if there wasn’t something similar there.

She would make more money working as a agency worker in one of the food/distribution factories though.

My daughter worked one summer for Amazon in their warehouse, worked hard but she got as many hours as she wanted.

MiddleAgedDread · 08/07/2026 13:09

She's left it too late to be looking for summer work now! Festival venues were definitely advertising a while ago. Some are doing summer camp work which is also underway. A lot of students also have evening / weekend jobs throughout the year so pick up extra shifts over the holidays.

JaneOfGaunt · 08/07/2026 13:14

My DD and many of her friends applied to all the festival venues including Guilded Balloon months ago and none of them have got anything. A few rejections and a lot of silence. Shes also looking at cafe jobs etc but there seems to be hardly anything. One of her friends is taking on a voluntary role to at least get some experience to improve her chances next time. I think there are vast numbers of performers, etc., coming up for the festival who need jobs to fund it, and many of them have worked for the venues before, so get most of the roles.

NoTouch · 09/07/2026 09:31

has she tried hotels - event bar staff, waiting, cleaning - wages are white, hours unsociable so will need transport, need to be flexible to events that are happening , but they are usually looking for staff as have huge turnovers
