Daughter Footballer Mums

Hi…
We are planning our move to Edinburgh and we have a few more visits booked coming up (schools, neighbourhoods & the like). We are looking at football clubs/ academies for our two daughters and son.

A BIG part of our lives is football for our three children. Our two daughters are mad about football and our son too! Could anyone (with experience) recommend a serious but supportive football club for girls and boys? We have two girls (U10 & U12) and our son is U6.

Our daughters play for a Series A team club in Rome, Italy. The girls club has top notch coaching and a lot of care & attention is paid to the players development, skills, agility and mental strength too (especially for the girls). The coaches are super professional and manage to create such a great spirit of belonging and love for the sport that we will be incredibly sad to leave.

Therefore, I need recommendations for an excellent female football club/academy for U10 & U12 (which continues up to U17) and likewise a strong football club/academy for boys of 6 years old.

We will happily commute for a great team/club. We drive one hour currently and back to get our three to practice, and that’s excluding days of mayhem traffic for us.

Thank you!

There are loads of girls football teams in Edinburgh, which part of the city are you interested in? The children who are really serious about it tend to play for multiple teams, and the academies scout from those.

We're south side and can recommend Boroughmuir Thistle as a non-school affiliated club, but James Gillespies Primary School has a great football set up.

We’re just outside Edinburgh and my 12 year old daughter is about to move to under 14s. Her dad is the coach of her team. It’s worth being aware (not sure how it works in Italy) that 12 and under tend to play 9 a side before moving up to 11s at under 14.
Boroughmuir are a good team as are Hibs. As Ginny says, good players will be scouted by the bigger and development teams.

Approach both Heart Fc and Hibernian FC these would be most similar to your series A academy and both offer excellent coaching and opportunities for development. Reach out to them and share where the girls currently are playing and ask to visit. Then I would also recommend Coerver Scotland as an addition - they run high performance training regularly in Edinburgh including ‘Just for Girls’ and work with girls from all the top academies in Scotland so there you meet other families of similar ages girls who can share more around the clubs. You’ll find Coerver Scotland info on line too. Good luck with the move!
