English to Edinburgh school year groups

Potentially looking at moving to Edinburgh next July as DP has been offered a job there.
My child will have just finished year 6 in the English school system. Their birthdate is June 2015.
Would they go into the last year of primary school in Edinburgh? If so, is there a SATs style exam?

Yes, a June 2015 birthday would start P7 in August 2026. Then on to S1 the following year August 2027.

SATs wise I'd say no. Schools are often testing and streaming the children through the year but, in my experience, it's nothing that the parents would be involved in or know much about. Even the children just see it as part of the school day, and not like they are being tested.

Google SNSA, this is an assessment that children do in certain years, p7 is one of them, but there's certainly no pressure around it in the way I hear about SATs.

Your child born in June 2015 would have started P1 in Scotland at age 5 in 2020. They will be scheduled to go into P6 in Aug 2025, so will have 2year in primary school before going to secondary in Aug 2027. I think. I worked it out on a bit of paper!

The Scottish school system is quite different from the English system. There aren't any official exams at Primary age, and there isn't the same choices of school at secondary, you tend to go to your catchment school (though this may be different in Edinburgh). You can make a placing request for a specific secondary school, but the 'best' schools will have many placing requests and they are unlikely to take on any pupils outside their catchment. You can check catchment areas here https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/catchmentmap

Now I'm confused. My logic is
born 2015
age 5 in summer 2020 and start P1 in aug 2020
so start P2 in 2021, P3 in 2022, P4 in 2023, P5 in 2024 and therefore start P6 in 2025?

** oops, just reread and its next summer! That makes more sense to me now. Apologies for confusion.

Thanks for your replies. I would actually be really happy for my child to do an extra year at primary so that's a big positive

No SATS in Scotland, thankfully!

You might need an address in Edinburgh before you can register them in their catchment school.

P7 is a great year to join school in Scotland. They generally do quite a bit of helping with the P1s and taking responsibility within the school, often work on a play, and get ready for high school by doing a lot of transition activities (sports activities at the feeder high school, visits from senior management, full transition days at the high school following their new timetable). I would say the whole year is characterised by social responsibility, consolidation of learning and transition to the next stage.

The issue moving from England to Scotland is if you have a child with a September-January birthday.

My DS has an October birthday and is now 15. If we were still in England he would be going into Year 11 in September and doing his GCSEs next summer and have 3 years of school/A levels left.

As we are now in Scotland he has just done his Nat5s and only has 2 years left. so he's doing a year less at school.
