Help! North Berwick High School?

Hello, we've recently moved to East Lothian and our catchment for secondary is North Berwick High School. I'd love to hear from some current parents or anyone familiar with the school and what their thoughts are on it? The positives and the negatives etc.

My child is academic but also young for their year and quite shy and awkward at times compared to their peers. For this reason we've been considering private school, however the commute (and huge price commitment obviously) is certainly a factor for us.

We're trying to get a tour of the school organised, but from the outside NB High seems to be in a lovely location right next to The Law and with its own playfield/astro!

Thanks in advance :)

There's a Facebook group East Lothian Ladies that might be worth asking! We're in the county but not NB

I live in NB. I actually went to NBHS albeit a long time ago. From what I hear from friends if you are academic and have home support then you will likely do well. A couple of families I know use tutors to assist with exam prep. It’s a big school and it runs big class sizes. For a shy child maybe the size could be a tough but equally it’s a larger pool for them to find their people so it could work either way. Overall, it’s well rated and the parents I know like it. They would like to see a bigger crack down on mobile phone use at school but I think this is common. The sports seem good and they push the teams. My children commute to private as do a sizeable minority and they get the hang of the commute quickly. NB is a great place to live. Welcome!

It’s a fantastic school. Great staff, all very dedicated and supportive.

I am local and have kids at the primary and secondary. I don't think you will know until you visit and are able to compare it with private. I have loved the primary and the secondary has some very bright and capable pupils but I don't think behavioural problems are tackled well. They obviously don't have the resources of a private school and if your child needs extra help settling I really would make sure and explore all options. I wish I had!
