With SQA exams starting tomorrow, is it time for a general exam thread?

It's just DD for me, doing Nat 5s. My first 'anxious parent for formal exams' experience. Starts with Music on Monday and ends with Art & Design on 26th, so we've exams throughout. Study leave not started here so first exam is on first day of study leave. She's over revision already so going to be a long 5 weeks.

@WhatWouldTheDoctorDo DS took AH English and LOVED it. And now that he’s at Uni doing humanities he is very grateful for the grounding it gave him. So many transferable skills.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 14/05/2025 21:32

Thank you @YouBelongWithMe @lostinthesunshine @PearlStork all very useful. Your DD experience particularly helpful PearlStork. PPE is the course of choice, so DC torn about whether AH Economics would be helpful or would mean a repeat of some work in year 1, given economics isn’t a pre-requisite for the course. It’s a shame he can’t do both Economics and English tbh, but his other two are non negotiable for him, and there’s no way he would do four, even in his timetable permitted. I was very proud that he isn’t being swayed by the fact that that one of the choices gives him a much cushier timetable - no lessons on a Friday and several late mornings 😂

anyway, I should stop de-railing the thread! Thanks for all the thoughts though, I appreciate it.

Issy422 · 14/05/2025 22:51

DD wanted to go through it (I watched the videos and wrote out all the answers, so she didn't have to spend 45 mins watching them) and looks like she got 30 on both papers, so fingers crossed she will have passed after all even if she didn't get all the marks she thought. They do like to worry us, don't they?

No worries about derailing the thread @WhatWouldTheDoctorDo. There is an UCAS applicants thread that might be useful to post on as it's parents of S6's and was very helpful when I derailed it a few weeks ago https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/scotsnet/5188979-scottish-ucas-applicants-2025-entry?utm_campaign=thread&utm_medium=share

Good luck to those doing Physics and German tomorrow 🤞🍀

i know there's a HE board but that's dominated by English parents/schools/unis. I thought I'd start our own thread for Scottish parents of kids apply...

@WhatWouldTheDoctorDoDD1 has loved AH English (taken alongside AH French, AH Modern Studies and a part higher in Philosophy)… but then she is going to study English Lit & French at Uni so that’s just as well… I would imagine the dissertation skills learned would be very useful across a number of disciplines…

LoopyGremlin · 15/05/2025 04:09

Good news about maths @Issy422. We haven’t looked at paper 2 but he got 36/40 in paper one so that’s positive.

LaughingLemur · 15/05/2025 07:55

Good news on the Maths. My DD didn't want to look so we'll have to wait til August. Good luck to everyone doing Physics and German today.

summerscomingsoon · 15/05/2025 09:14

oh gosh I didn't realise you could see the paper and answer from maths on youtube. I don't really want my DS seeing it as it will knock his confidence if he has done poorly. Another issue is he has dreadful handwriting and am concerned the examiners will be unable to read his work.

physics today. good wishes to all

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 15/05/2025 10:11

Both my DC sitting physics today on at AH and one at Nat 5.

I will feel like I'm free after it as DS is completely finished and DD only has French and art to go which are her best subjects and she doesn't need to do very much to get As in both.

RausageSoul · 15/05/2025 10:20

Last push of physics revision because it’s absolutely been a victim of maths!

good luck to those sitting anything today!

Issy422 · 15/05/2025 10:44

It is difficult to know whether to tell them about the videos. DD was so sure that she had failed badly and was starting to worry a bit about next year's options. After seeing the videos, I had a feeling that she might have done better than she thought, so I told her I had the answers if she wanted to know. In her case, it made her feel better. She's not entirely convinced still in case she misremembered some answers, but she does now have hope of still being able to do her chosen options next year.

I hope Physics is going well. A day of Apps revision to get through here today before tomorrow's exam, then a whole week before Modern and Art. Will be a well deserved weekend off and DD loves Eurovision, so it's good timing.

I feel the same, free after tomorrow. DS just got Modern & Biz Mgmt next week, both of which he his good at.

concretejungle · 15/05/2025 13:06

DD reporting that both higher physics papers were tricky today.

CleaningSilverCandlesticks · 15/05/2025 14:20

DD has the day off today. Not had a day off for weeks. DS had day off yesterday. Just taken DD out for lunch. Lovely just chilling for a while (DS is self-sufficient). Two weeks to go.

summerscomingsoon · 15/05/2025 15:49

Ds said Nat 5 physics was. OK could have passed or failed. His worst subject so to scrape a c would be a bonus

LoopyGremlin · 15/05/2025 16:03

My son and all his pals seem to think N5 physics was more difficult than previous papers 😢

Untery · 15/05/2025 16:48

Exact same here. Crazy hard and everyone saying same apparently

LoopyGremlin · 15/05/2025 17:03

@Untery
At least if everyone found it difficult then the grade boundary might reduce. My ds barely got the questions finished so had no time to look over it at all whereas in maths yesterday he had time to read over his answers.

Seems similar to N5 then ☹️

RausageSoul · 15/05/2025 17:17

I’m also hearing nat5 was not kind.

Yes ds said nat5 maths was fine but physics was awful. He has some very smart friends too saying the same. Hoping they might lower grade boundary.

YouBelongWithMe · 15/05/2025 17:51

DS seemed pleased with AH Physics, said it went well. I think his coursework will drag him down though - he definitely didn't put enough work in.

We now have a bit of a lull. No exams next week, then DD has N5 Biology and RMPS in the last week, and DS has Higher RMPS (Crash Higher).

summerscomingsoon · 15/05/2025 18:27

oh gosh. sorry your DCs didn't think physics was good. well as I've said previously physics is my DS worst subject. him thinking it wasn't as bad as he expected is probably just because he managed to answer all the questions. doesn't mean he has passed. just glad it's over and also hoping they lower the boundaries :)

tetleyhead · 15/05/2025 19:02

Tears again this week. Maths and Physics were both tough but Physics today tipped DC over the edge again.

This is where we are at too. DS said the AH exam went well but his assignment was last minute and far too short, I suspect the content won't have been up to scratch either. 🙄
