Need Help Choosing Areas In North Lanarkshire Housing Application

NotaWhiteRefridgerator · 25/03/2025 20:02

I tried to hand my council housing application form in today, but was given the form back and told to have a good think about what areas to select. I have literally ticked the box for every area listed, but am looking to move out of my private let flat due to the street I live in being scary (amongst many other reasons).

The person who dealt with me at the housing office told me that they aren’t allowed to give help, but that there are areas I don’t want to live in.

The areas I have ticked are:

Coatbridge
Airdrie
Motherwell
Bellshill
Uddingston
Cumbernauld
Moodiesburn
Kilsyth
Wishaw.

Does anyone have experience of living in these areas and what they would, or wouldn’t recommend?

The only place on this list I would choose is Uddingston.

You need to be more specific, there will be areas in each town that are better and worse than others. What areas do you know already?

I know some areas in Coatbridge, Airdrie & Motherwell. I am autistic and generally only stick to places I know, so this is the first time I’ve really branched out.

That’s the area I would most like to live in from the list.

Interesting that Uddingston is on that list given the fact it’s not in North Lanarkshire.

There are good and bad areas in all the towns you mentioned OP, if you know any specific areas I could probably provide more info.

Part of uddingston (tannochside) is NLC, but other parts are SLC. And the new builds are basically Glasgow. It's a funny place...

There's quiet parts of Motherwell and Wishaw, and good train links to Edinburgh and Glasgow from both. Similar to Bellshill, although don't know as much about that part of town.

@Tofu35 This is a common misconception but none of Uddingston is in North Lanarkshire.

Tannochside, Viewpark and Broomhouse share a postal district with Uddingston which is why it often gets used but Uddingston itself is completely in South Lanarkshire.

I actually posted about this a few days ago as I’m aware of some people who bought in Broomhouse believing their kids were in school catchment for Uddingston/Hamilton but as it is in Glasgow City this wasn’t the case.

I know it is quite pedantic and in reality day to day it doesn’t really matter but it’s classic case of estate agents extending an area to try and raise house prices, similar to ‘East Merchant City’, ‘North Kelvinside’ etc.

Viewpark/Tannochside are towns/villages in their own right, they are in a different local authority and have a different MP/MSP to Uddingston.

They do form a continuous urbanisation which is why some people consider it the same, but technically it’s not.

Thank you ☺️

The areas I ticked in Motherwell are: Brandon, Caldergrove, Carfin, Coursington, Daisypark, Flemington, Highfield, Hillhead, Ladywell, Laughlan Drive Area, Forgewood, Muirhouse, New Forgewood, North Motherwell, North Lodge, Parkneuk, Ravenscraig North, Tillanburn, Woodilee and Yett

In Wishaw, the areas I have ticked are: Cambusnethan, Central Wishaw, Coltness, Craigneuk, Dimsdale, Gowkthrappel, Netherton, Overtown and Waterloo

Don’t know all of them I’m afraid but here’s what I would go for.

  • Carfin
  • Ladywell
  • North Ravenscraig
  • Coltness

What I would avoid

  • Craigneuk
  • Forgewood
  • Muirhouse

Whilst Uddingston is the best on the list Viewpark has a poor housing mix and has some very large schemes and there isn’t much else around. Tannochside is a better mix.

if you don’t have a car then I would weigh access to train stations as well as buses very highly. Getting around Lanarkshire on buses is a nightmare.

NotaWhiteRefridgerator · 27/03/2025 12:42

I have ticked Tannochside, Birkenshaw, Laburnum Road, Redwood and Glentree.

You make an excellent point about public transport.

I drive, but only to areas I am familiar with. I have recently applied for and received a disabled persons railcard, which means I can get up to 1/3 off of ticket prices. I’m hoping it will force me to expand my horizons and go out more, as I feel too scared to drive to places to like Stirling or Edinburgh.

Where have you ticked for Cumbernauld? Some areas are absolutely fine but others I’d avoid like the plague. Sadly they’re likely to be the areas with housing available.

I ended up scoring out the areas I had ticked for Cumbernauld. I still haven’t handed the application form in though.
