Young Scot card if don't have passport

Does anyone know how to apply for the Young Scot card if your child doesn't have a passport.

The website is the most frustrating thing I've ever encountered.

It just keeps getting stuck and I can't find an option of how to upload an alternative.

I already have the under 12 version for my son so assumed it would link to this but apparently not.

Sorry I don’t know, but can your ask your school if you can apply via them? Our local school did a session at the start of S1 to get all pupils’ applications completed and processed.

Your local library should be able to help you out.

FiveBarGate · 03/02/2025 16:57

He's still in primary so they can't do it but they have a lot of visits and his current card runs out three days before they start! We were told they must have one by then.

I think I need a form from the council. But I have to pick this up from the nearest community hub 20 miles away.

It's not too bad for me because I will be driving past it on the way home from work but given this is meant to help people on low incomes and that journey costs £11.50 on a bus, it doesn't seem well thought out.

I'd assume it's the people most in need of it who are also least likely to have a passport for their child or be able to access a centre.

My child is in p1 and I applied for hers on the parents portal. We didn't need a passport

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 03/02/2025 17:13

You don't need a passport but the website is literally the third cycle of hell. DS19 still uses it as his worst website experience ever. It's the actual worst.

dementedpixie · 03/02/2025 17:29

If they already have a young scot card with the Pass hologram then that can be used instead of a passport

dementedpixie · 03/02/2025 17:32

The primary school usually does applications in primary 7 ready for starting high school

dementedpixie · 03/02/2025 17:35

@FiveBarGate which council is it?

FiveBarGate · 03/02/2025 17:55

Aberdeenshire. He just has a Saltire Card.

That went through the Parents Portal but it's not the hologram kind.

If you can't upload a passport or hologram (I didn't know what this was so thanks for clearing it up!) you can't progress and there aren't any other buttons so you just go round and round.

Our primary school just sent the link to do it online.

I contacted the council and the automated reply says go to a centre 'but you may need an appointment'.

Does anyone know if you can only do the paper version do you have to get printed photos? It says someone has to sign it so assume so.

So another expense for low income families. Everywhere else just has a webcam, click, there you go. Even the photo renewal for a driving license can be done at the post office.

This is only valid up to 12. I have that one. But it runs out three days before the visits.

That system was fine. It just went to the school for them to verify they are who they say they are.

Thanks

Yes you get an automated response saying here's where you can get a form.

Perhaps they'll send it. If not I can hopefully get one on Wednesday.

Then I'll probably have more questions 🤣

My daughter's friend didn't have a passport and got it sorted through the library -she needed a teacher to sign some form but I think if you already have the under 12 one you won't need this.

FiveBarGate · 04/02/2025 20:54

Thanks @PurpleThistle7

I wonder if the under 12 ones are different between areas. Ours don't have pictures though I think it went through the school in some way.

I now have a form so step ome accomplished. I don't understand why it isn't just available to download though.

We get photos for their 12 year old ones. Her friend didn't have one until 12 though as she's only now taking the bus around with her friends and such. It took me 'forever' to sort this out, genuinely a horrible system.

Our libraries help you with this in Edinburgh.
