Just that really. Passport still has 8 years left on it so don't want to do that yet, but how do I go about changing my surname legally?

Just start using it, for banks, dvla etc you would provide them with your marriage license.

There's no official process in Scotland however, if you want it changed on your birth certificate I believe it costs £40 to register with NRS (national records of Scotland).

@SnaccidentsHappen so if I wanted to change it with my bank, I can just go in and show them my certificate (and any other ID they may need)?

Yes, it's pretty straight forward from what I remember.

In Scotland you can use your wedding certificate as the evidence (it’s different in Rest of UK). Some ask for the actual certificate and then post it back to you like passport and driving licence. I changed my passport first but kept my driving licence in my maiden name for a while as I had a couple of bank account that I hadn’t changed and was like oh I’ll keep it like this until I do that.

Each institution will do it slightly differently. However legally in Scotland you can go by either name.

Agree with just start using it, but you cannot change your name on your birth certificate to your married name.
