Moved from England to Scotland

Hello,

Moved from England to Scotland last month and whilst I am waiting to hear back from the Surgery I registered my child at (11 months of age) I just thought I would ask on here how Health Visitor appointments and vaccinations work in Scotland.

Just wanted to know dates of development reviews and vaccinations if anyone has any info.

In England 9-12 months is development review and vaccinations around 12 months.

If areas are different I am Moray area.

Many thanks.

I think the vaccination schedule is the same wherever you are and managed through your GP.

I saw a HV once when my youngest was born, after that they had no involvement at all.

@Misthios are you in Scotland? Unless you elect not to see the HV, they will continue visiting your child for many years in Scotland.

The appts get further and further apart. If you call your local GP surgery they should be able to give you the phone number for the HV team. The schedule after 11 months is one home visit between:

  • 13 to 15 months
  • 27 to 30 months
  • 4 to 5 years, before they start school

The vaccination schedule is the same UK wide - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-complete-routine-immunisation-schedule/the-complete-routine-immunisation-schedule-from-february-2022

Yes I am - my youngest is secondary school age and he was number 3, we most definitely did not see a HV at 13-15 months or after that, although he was seen for his routine vaccinations and at pre-school by various professionals for sight checks, hearing checks etc.

It was all very much "here are details of your HV service, contact us if you have any concerns. No concerns, no contact. Prefer it that way, tbh.

Vaccinations schedule is the same.

Health Visitors after the baby stages I think I saw the health visitor at age 2 and then again at age 4.

The service ends once your child starts school aged between 4.5 and 5.5

HVs are a bit thin on the ground in some areas.

When mine were younger the vaccination appointment used to get sent to me rather than me booking an appointment. Is that still the same?

Yes, vaccine appts come in the post. Hv appts usually get arranged during your current appt for the next one and then you can phone in if you need to change it nearer the time.

I moved to Scotland from England when my LO was 2.5, and tried and failed to see a health visitor for basic advice about sleep issues and toilet training - was given a number by my GP, called and was told they didn’t deal with my area/ postcode but to try the local health hub, went up to the health hub and was told (via intercom) that unless my child ‘s CHI number was on their ‘list’ they would not come see me, and to go back to my GP. Who gave me the same number to call again. It was pretty awful and I do wonder what happens to those who had more serious issues and aren’t as persistent. Thankfully we got over the issues in time but it felt as though the HV team didn’t want to know.
Hopefully you have better luck OP!

Vaccinations we did via our GP practice nurse, no issues at all there.

Callisto1 · 24/07/2024 10:20

That’s completely different from my experience @Eatyourcrust. We moved from abroad about 8 years ago and a couple of months after we registered with GP we had a health visitor coming round.

I didn’t know what they were so we just sat in the living room and had a chat about dc who was 2.5 at the time. I think the appointment came in a letter, but I can’t remember if I had to ring to arrange a time. It’s too long ago.
