NHS Scotland waiting times

Feeling pretty low to discover there is a 70 week wait time for my 'urgent referral', meaning I still have over a year to go before I'm seen.

I moved back to Scotland following a decade in London and can't believe how terrible the NHS is in comparison. I've already had to take my child to be seen privately due to a similar wait time (18 months) for a medical issue identified at birth.

When did it get so bad?! Is private healthcare the only solution?

This is all so depressing. In London we were served so well by the NHS and always seen within weeks - the clinic I am waiting 70 weeks for now would have seen me in a couple of months. The longest I waited was maybe five months immediately after covid due to the backlog.

The system there also gave you the freedom to log in and pick the hospital and consultant you wanted, and a date and time to suit you.

I know London is like a country of its own and that won't necessarily be the experience in the rest of England, but it's quite a shocking contrast.

It might be an idea for people to research the particular region's NHS before moving. I live in Wales and I certainly would not choose to live here if I were elderly or had a health condition.

Yes of course the NHS is amazing in London??!!! It’s where all the national centres for excellence are for all specialities??? There will be more dermatologists in London than the whole of Scotland! Talk about comparing apples and pears.

Even before the extra tax the NHS was struggling to fill roles in Scotland and it’s always struggled to fill roles in rural Scotland.

Overall Scotland is much better than England.

Stop spending on ‘indie’ and put it in the nhs! Both spending Time and money.

Specialities vary wildly with Ortho and cardiology being some of the worst.

The situation seems to have got much worse over the last 5 years or so. I made a decision to not apply for a job in England because the NHS was reported to be much worse there, especially for my health condition. I’m not sure that would be true any more.

What hospital allowed you to log in and pick a consultant? Certainly my friends living in London have never been able to do this!

Back to add that a friend is on an 18 month waiting list for a hip operation.

So is my mother in law it's disgraceful.

Well, I need to take back my statement about CAMHs - a few days after my last post on this thread a letter came through the post with an appointment for DS! Absolutely over the moon. Can't believe it. Feeling like we have won the lottery.

Vettrianofan · 11/07/2024 08:02

In fact it must have been hours after my post on the same day seeing as it's 11th July today!🙈

This is interesting on the differences in the 4 UK NHS systems
www.theguardian.com/society/2023/aug/14/which-uk-nation-has-got-the-longest-nhs-waiting-list

I note the graph for England showed the time to start treatment, whereas that for Scotland was time to outpatient appointment, so not looking at the same thing at all. I am on an 18 month wait for an outpatient appointment, once I have been seen at outpatients it is currently another four years for inpatient treatment with NHS Scotland

I've just been checking quotes for private cover, £68 a month for family but won't cover my existing condition.....ugh.

If you find someone who takes existing conditions, please come back and let us know!
