I do think some of the main people affected by this will be the racist great uncles etc who are reported for their utterances over the Christmas dinner etc. and will this be a productive use of police time? Of course not.

The main problem with all of these failed SNP bills is their breathtaking inability to think through the consequences.

Is this bill likely to add to police workload? Yes!

Do we have the time and money to recruit extra manpower? No!

Is tackling these reported hate crimes more important than investigating burglaries? No!

FOR GOODNESSSAKE DON’T DO IT THEN!!!

These really, really basic thought processes don’t seem to happen in the SNP / Green government’s brains ever. It’s astonishing.

Thick as mince!

Totally agree. Police Scotland are already scaling back the crimes they’re dealing with due to shortage of resources. Does ‘real” hate crime need to be dealt with-absolutely… but this nonsense law is a charter for the professionally offended, and will water down the response and opinion of “real” hate crime…and you can bet your boots that police management will be prioritising response to these reports over actual real crime…

Poll 100 people in the street about what the polis should be doing - investigating burglaries, rapes or drunk driving, or dealing with a middle aged mum who has "deadnamed" or "misgendered" someone on Twitter.

It's so screamingly obvious that it's painful.

Northernsouloldies · 20/03/2024 20:22

No resources to investigate real crime.. Aberdeen trialled for this .. outcome.. police Scotland ooo it's been a success...populace of Aberdeen...no it fucking hasn't.look out for this coming to your city, town, village.but money to spunk away on ridiculous policies that can't be measured.take a bow Humza.

Shouldgetupearlier · 20/03/2024 22:06

It’s one thing to not have resources to investigate true crime. It’s a completely different level of stupidity to announce that you’re not going to investigate it.
