Hi - we're looking to move out of Edinburgh to SQ, Dalmeny, Kirkliston, Ratho or Balerno. Looking for a family oriented community and good schools. House budget is £450K for 4 bedroom house. Any recommendations? Thanks

You could look at Kirknewton too. I think they attend Balerno high.

Thanks @BigBoysDontCry
so Kirknewton and Linlithgow added to the list along with SQ, Dalmeny, Kirkliston, Ratho or Balerno. Looking to move during summer holidays x

Would recommend Ratho, great family oriented community. Lovely nurturing primary school and catchment for secondary is Balerno. My kids are at primary but friends with children at Balerno speak very highly of it.
We can walk to international climbing centre, which also has a gym and exercise classes. They are building a surf centre in Ratho which is due to open towards the end of this year which looks like an amazing resource. Can cycle on the canal either into centre of Edinburgh or out towards West Lothian / south Queensferry. Close to tram at Ingliston.

We moved out of centre of Edinburgh 10 years ago and love it.

Here is a 4 bed house for sale currently. I have been inside this style but not this actual house and it feels spacious.

Many thanks @Hera14
This house looks lovely. I'll book a viewing. How's the waiting times at Ratho GP surgery? Is the area overpopulated like everywhere else these days? Looking for a quieter village with lots of green spaces and families, thanks

Hi

Because Ratho is not over developed, the GP surgery is very efficient. I have a few long term conditions so have quite a lot of contact with the surgery. Basically, you phone on the day and request a call back from GP, you then get a call back, usually same day (unless phoning very late) where you are triaged by the GP and are offered an appointment, again mostly same day. There is no long waiting for appointments.

Ratho is a quieter village, yet has all the basics, village primary, GP surgery, village shop, play park, Bridge Inn, for meals and drinks, community centre, currently building a new library and nursery, Ratho church, which is well used by community groups. There are vibrant scouting and guiding groups, a youth football team, adult football team, various yoga classes and dance classes, easy access to Dalmahoy hotel and Norton hotel which both have great spa facilities and pools, golfing at Dalmahoy , Ratho Park and Gogarburn.

The kids are all looking forward to the surf resort opening.

i honestly feel like we have the best of all worlds here, thriving village life but 8 miles from Princes Street and all Edinburgh offers.

Friends used to live in Kirknewton and were very happy there and also with the schools (they moved away for work). DD23 has a couple of good friends who grew up in Balerno (both now doing PhDs/post-grads in prestigious fields) and who speak fondly of their high school. DSIL's DM relocated from Morningside to Balerno a few years ago because it is less busy.
