OrElia25 · 12/11/2023 17:43

DH may have a job in Aberdeen 3 days a week at the office, anyone has any experience on commuting from South Queensferry or Edinburgh ? How feasible is it ? Trying to figure out where to move to.
Thanks a lot

Will he be staying in Aberdeen for the three days? If not then it’s a huge commute on a daily basis for three days a week.

BarneyAteMyHomework · 12/11/2023 17:46

I was going to ask the same thing. It’s really not a daily commute I’d be comfortable doing.

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 12/11/2023 17:47

That would be an insane commute. You want to live north of Dundee.

FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 12/11/2023 17:50

God no. I went from Edinburgh to Aberdeen the other day for work - it was five hours total on the train - no way could you do that every day for three days on an indefinite basis. I imagine driving would be even worse! Also have to think about weather - not uncommon for the train line to be closed or lots of delays due to weather in autumn/winter.

emummy · 12/11/2023 17:51

We drive to Edinburgh from Aberdeen to visit DD at uni; it’s about 2-2.5 hours to the bridges. The road is ok, but Dundee traffic can be sticky. I wouldn’t want to do it as a commute! Can you move further north, or could he stay there for those 3 days?
DH initially worked in Aberdeen through the week, and drove back to us in central belt at the weekend, but he was pretty knackered as a result

Dorriethelittlewitch · 12/11/2023 17:58

Both dh and I commuted to Aberdeen from Dundee for a while. Most of the time it wasn't too bad but winter could be awful. Cancelled trains, blizzards on the A90 at Forfar, diversions through the countryside.

If I was driving to work in Aberdeen and home 3 nights a week, I really wouldn't want to live any further south than we currently do (south Aberdeenshire).

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 12/11/2023 17:59

Daily or would he stay there for 2 night? If the latter it’s doable, daily would be insane

EarthyMangold · 12/11/2023 18:00

I think it would be OK if the trains were reliable. So, unfortunately, not really anymore.

Groovee · 12/11/2023 18:04

My friend's husband used to work in Aberdeen 4 days a week. He got digs up there as he worked long days.

fishfingersandchipsagain · 12/11/2023 18:04

I did Edinburgh to Aberdeen as a daily commute when I was in my mid-20s. It was utterly exhausting.

I also, a year or two later, did Birmingham to West London for a while. They are roughly equivalent.

Scottishskifun · 12/11/2023 18:05

Daily commute not a chance especially in Winter he would be spending about 5 hours a day!
I have worked with people who would stay up a few days then travel back as the cost of hotels and bnbs have come down quite a bit.

Heyhoherewegoagain · 12/11/2023 21:12

Du does Dundee to just south of Aberdeen and it’s an hour door to door BUT he leaves the house at 6am
A lot of people travel to Aberdeen from Dundee

Notjustamum10 · 12/11/2023 21:25

I’d suggest he travels up on day 1, stays overnight 2 nights, and back evening of day 3. Lots of people in the oil industry in Aberdeen do similar. The city built loads of (too many!) new hotels pre-pandemic so rooms are plentiful and cheap.

OrElia25 · 12/11/2023 21:30

Thanks all
he was considering staying in a hotel - we are trying to assess if it would work or if we should just move to Aberdeen …

Where do you live now?

If you are already in South Queensferry and need to stay for schools then as suggested, it would need an overnight. It's too much to do three times a week. Will he be based in the city centre or further out adding more onto the journey?

If you are already moving then you need to be north of Dundee. There are plenty of lovely areas here or in Aberdeenshire..

OrElia25 · 14/11/2023 09:35

We’re looking to move and we really love Edinburgh area - we like Aberdeen as well and office would be there so would make sense.
where about in Aberdeenshire would you recommend to look?
DH office will be in Westhill.
thanks a lot

I'd suggest south of Aberdeen as there are now decent links via the AWPR to Westhill/ Dyce/Inverurie.

Have to say I vested interest as we're just about to put our house on the market and we're between Stonehaven and Aberdeen

Calmdown14 · 18/11/2023 22:03

If he's in Westhill then it's not a decent train commute. As above, easy in a car but you'd be a train then a bus which would be awful (plus the train to get to Waverley or Haymarket in the first place). It's really not sustainable.

For area depends what you want. Banchory is lovely. Stonehaven great for the coast and AWPR. Peterculter is nice. Most of Aberdeenshire is pretty decent it just depends how rural you want to be.

Aberdeen is a small city so even being in the centre is quite green.

SaffronSpice · 19/11/2023 14:14

Westhill is in Aberdeenshire not Aberdeen City.

OrElia25 · 19/11/2023 18:25

Thank you All, this is really helpful.
DH and I are city people, so rural locations will not work for us (we currently live in a nice small town where there is not much to do and limited public transports).
