Can you tell me about it at all? My children have professed a desire to try this. What age did they start? Group lessons or individual? Do they enjoy it ?

Mine started on drum kit at 7 then joined a pipe band at 12. He was playing with the band within a few months. Younger ds started from the beginning with a pipe band aged 9 and will probably be playing with the band next time they're out.

You need to find a beginners or teaching band. What sort of area are you in?

My DS2 plays with a pipe band. He started learning with them at 9. The youngest his teacher would take them is 8, as before that their hands are a bit small for the drumsticks.

He is almost 16 now, and absolutely loves it still.

Thanks. My children are 14 and 12. So wonder if too old maybe? Will the lessons be all little kids? Did your son do drums or bagpipes?

My son does drum. I wouldn't say they are too old. It does depend on the band and how much they want new players really. My son was the only learner for a while. We have had adult learners too. Definitely contact your local bands and find out.

I’d have said a good age …. I saw Ellon RBL were looking for drummers recently (with no experience, full tutoring offered).
As were Bucksburn & District.
both have Facebook pages with contact info.
