Fastrack at Edinburgh airport? How necessary is this?

We don’t usually fly from Edinburgh. I was just looking at booking parking and hotel and I found that there is an option to opt in to Fastrack through security. I have never heard of this before. Do we need to do this? Or is it a waste of money? Flying in August so it will be busy

Do you have small kids? If you do you can use the family lane. If not, if flying in august at a busy time of day id be tempted to fast track if you don't like queues.

It can be fine, sometimes it's a lengthy-ish wait.
Might be better this summer than last summer...

I do have kids but youngest is 11. Maybe we can Fastrack on the day if we need to? Or does it need to be beforehand?

I've flown loads from Edinburgh and never takes more than 20 mins to get through (except in early 2022 when they were still opening up again post covid and were short staffed!)
Edinburgh has a lot of business traffic though so usually busy early morning and late afternoon on weekdays than at other times.

Thanks we are flying weekend so maybe not too bad

You won't need fast track!

emmathedilemma · 28/02/2023 20:02

The only time I’ve paid for fast track (last summer when it was all kicking off with long queues at security), the fast track line was slower than the normal line thanks to the guy in front of me who hadn’t got fast track access for his full party as he thought. I’ve literally never seen security so quiet! I think you can buy it up to the time slot so I’d play it by ear and purchase on the day if needed as it’s not cheap if you’re paying for a family.

rookiemere · 01/03/2023 08:53

You can pay for fastrack at the airport so I would wait and see if you need it then.
If you're flying with Jet2 they have their own really fast check in so you should have loads of time for security, it's only Easyjet and Ryanair that tend to have long queues.

Yopy · 01/03/2023 11:14

Oh that’s reassuring it’s jet2 we are flying with

if you've got a morning flight Jet2 offer "twilight" bag drop the evening before which can save you time in the morning.

user567543 · 01/03/2023 11:37

Oh yes jet2 usually really good out of Edinburgh!

Yopy · 01/03/2023 11:56

Oh twilight drop off sounds great. Yes we have a 6.30 flight. Will need to figure out if we can do this. Thanks so much for the tips

OP posts:
Yopy · 01/03/2023 11:56

6.30 am that should read

Jet2 is usually really quick for bag drop off. We could have used the Twilight drop off in October, but by the time DH worked out costs of driving there and excessive parking fees, it seemed better just to get there a wee bit earlier than planned. As I say it was very quick in the end .

Yopy · 01/03/2023 12:10

And what is the recommended arrival time at airport for a 0630 flight? Is it arrive at 0430? Would the airport even be open then?

OP posts:
emmathedilemma · 01/03/2023 12:15

For a 6:30 flight I would definitely use twilight check in if you can. Security opens at 4am (unless it's changed) and you can check the departures schedule but there's usually quite a lot of package / budget airline flights depart between 6am and 7am. I would aim to be heading through security by 4:30 if you've done twilight bag drop. Then you'll have time for breakfast in departures.

rookiemere · 01/03/2023 12:23

When are you flying?

rookiemere · 01/03/2023 12:25

Sorry I see you said August. I wouldn't bother with Twilight check in unless it can be done easily. Airport usually busier at start of Scottish holidays than August. If you got there at 4 for a 6.30 flight you should have plenty of time for baggage drop off - and I'm usually a doomsday merchant arriving 3 hrs early.

Yopy · 01/03/2023 12:27

A doomsday merchant. That definitely describes me too !

rookiemere · 01/03/2023 12:43

Yeah and I was all for the twilight drop off, but DH talked me out of it, also household refused to order taxi earlier than 4 am for a 630am departure, but we had loads of time.

If you're staying at an airport hotel and can drop the bags off for free, then nothing lost. It's just that parking for the shortest amount of time at Edinburgh airport costs at least a tenner these days.

emmathedilemma · 01/03/2023 13:22

Depending on how much luggage you've got you can park at Ingliston park & ride and walk down to the airport to do twilight check in.

Yopy · 01/03/2023 13:47

Yes we haven’t booked hotel yet but may do premier inn so that will be a drive or a taxi ride away. So maybe twilight drop off won’t work. Unless we get the doubletree Hilton hotel which I believe is walking distance. But still probably need a taxi depending how heavy the bags are.

OP posts:
emmathedilemma · 01/03/2023 14:01

There's also a Moxy hotel and Hampton by Hilton at the airport. A taxi won't drop you much closer than you can walk from any of those as they've moved the taxi rank at the airport.
