Tell me about Largs and Troon...

Can anyone give me some insights on Largs and Troon? any specific areas to avoid or to look for?

I have started my house hunting for a property for a potential move to the Scottish seaside from the South East of England. I was going to focus on various seaside locations in Fife and also on Dunbar which I really liked but some people have suggested also having a look at Troon and Largs.

I am middle-aged but still active and enjoy the arts and outdoor activities like sailing and swimming and I want to be no more than an hour by train from a big city. I will be living on my own so looking for a 2 bed house with garden in a safe area. Maximum budget £230,000.

Bumping for you by pointing out Largs has double the rainfall of Dunbar and Fife coast, if that's a consideration for you.

Largs has a shingle beach, Troon 2 sandy beaches if that's a consideration.

Both have 'nice' MC areas and some rough schemes/flats.

But 2 beds in that price range won't be on those streets!

Both get mobbed with daytrippers on hot summer days so plan to go somewhere else then.

Largs has the Millport ferry, Vikinggar and a pool, more shops and cafes.

Troon will get the Arran ferry immanently and has the golf course. Troon is near Prestwick Airport and is more accessible to Glasgow/ the big shopping centres south of the city.

Spend a night in a hotel in each?

Largs has a lovely sandy beach at the foot of walkerston avenue, by Little Scotland almost-an-island.
The view from Largs is of Cumbrae, Bute and Arran, much closer than Troon which is of Arran in the distance and …. sea.
Troon has a better train service, but one an hour from Largs is not bad.
Largs - avoid nelson street area, Alexander avenue area, but the prices you are looking at are not in theses areas.
Take a look at the Largs and Millport weekly news, but bear in mind all local sorts are the “poor local child is deadly sick and the cooncil wilnae dae ony thing”.
House prices in Largs - cheaper than Troon, school in Largs, quite good considering, and hugely better than many nearby.
Good luck!
