Home Fees University

Hi - I am kind of confused by university fees and wondered if anyone could help.

The fees are a standard 1820 pounds per year but everyone is eligable to have the SAAS pay them on their behalf, is that correct? If so, why aren't they just 'free' if you have home-fee status - as in, why do you then have to apply to have the fee paid by the SAAS? Or do some people have to pay the 1820 pounds a year?

Yes, if you've only just moved to Scotland for example.

Also if people have already used up their 5 year allocation of funding they need to pay

You’re only entitled to a certain number of years for free - usually 4, but could be more depending on your degree. You can’t just rock up and do anything for free, you have to be using your entitlement. So once you’ve done your first degree you aren’t entitled to do another one for free, and switching courses in a way that adds years can be complicated financially too.

Sorry, meant 5 as per PP above, not 4

If someone has used their funding on course A and then some time later decide to do course B then they will need to pay their own fees

Ah ha - that makes sense - thank you!
