So DD got AAABC in Highers .
She's off to college for 6th yr to do HNC Social Science (not interested in staying at school)
Wants to go to Uni
She meets Edinburgh/Glas uni requirements for some social science courses.
Happy to go into 1st year, not looking for 2nd entry.

She's not wanting to aim high (as in apply to Ed/Glas as thinks that she'll be competing against all the private school kids with 5As + and will have no chance, and she's lacking confidence in herself :( . This makes me sad.

She should do well in her HNC all being well.

Any thoughts anyone?
Thanks muchly!

I agree about not getting hung up about Glasgow/Edinburgh. DDs love of Edinburgh is more the city than the uni. DS2 went to both Glasgow and Strathclyde and preferred Strathy (as did I). DS1 and DH both did vocational degrees at GCU.

I think a HNC instead of S6 is good prep for uni. Only half the subjects that DD did in S6 were relevant for her degree. She would have benefitted more from practising academic writing and critical thinking on S6. Plus it gives you a chance to sample subjects not available st school.

Friends of my DC who went the HNC/HND route were good students (law/business, engineering, sports science) either just slightly under the current requirements for degrees they wanted locally and didn't want to travel. All have graduated with 2:1s and gone on to graduate jobs. Even if the HNC entry requirements are a couple of highers I bet many (like the OPs DD) are way above this.

She's doing HNC as it's Level 7 , iirc is same level as Advanced Higher.
She's not going to go to another school /back to school for Adv Highers or do an "Access course"
Seems Glasgow Uni potentially would take her with a HNC/HND a summer school (like@Lidlfix DD,. Thanks for the encouragement @Lidlfix 👍😀

We will see how this year goes.
Thanks all!

Yes, that's what Dd did.
@prettybird your DS went to Aberdeen didn't he?
Dd got an offer for there too.

Not getting hung up on Glasgow/Edinburgh is one thing, and obviouslygood advice, but not aiming for them because you aren't following a traditional entry route is another.
You can get in with HNC/HND.
DD applied for Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow, Strathclyde, St Andrews.
She got offered all five, only Dundee was unconditional, but she met the conditions for the others.

Yes he did @JohnsShirt : just graduated with his MA in PIR, got a 2:1 and more importantly started a job in his (niche) field the week after graduating. And a month and a half later, he's still enjoying his job Smile

Had to drive up to Aberdeen twice in a week: once for the graduation ceremony and then to pick up all his stuff from his flat Hmm

That's great he's loving it.
Dd's BF is about to start his 5th year at Glasgow.
