Do you add a tip when you've paid optional service charge already ?

Hi,
Had a nice dinner at Dishoom at Edinburgh the other day. When the bill arrived I saw an 'optional 12.5 percent service charge' added to the bill. I was a bit confused as to the proper etiquette of leaving a tip in cash when I had already paid about £12 as optional service charge.
Does getting charged a service charge mean you already paid for the waiter's kindness ?
Any ideas ?
Sue

I don't pay a tip if they have already added this type of service charge.

I wouldn’t add a tip if this “optional” service charge has been added already

No if service charge has already been included then I don't leave another tip. The service charge IS the tip

ClocksGoingBackwards · 06/08/2022 16:05

No, the service charge is the tip.

drpet49 · 06/08/2022 16:06

No, never

Partypoooooper · 06/08/2022 16:07

No, the charge would be the tip and I would only pay and optional service charge of I wanted to tip.

No, I believe a lot of places have started adding (optional) service charge to the bill because so few people are carrying cash these days that it’s an easy way to add it on to the bill. But you can ask for it to be removed or changed.
