Hi there,

Firstly i have made an error and oversight, no travel since the pandemic. I have booked to take my DD17yrs to Amsterdam on 16th May flying from inverness. Checked last night and her passport expires 5 may 22. Regarding renewal it says can take 5 weeks and we have just over 5 weeks so looked at the speedy renewal involving an in person appt at the Glasgow office, this is the only office in Scotland. I live in Highland on Skye.
Spent the day on the phone and website to discover that all Glasgow appts till end of april are full and no appointments are available. The office is unable to tell me when the May dates will be released and May is cutting it fine anyway.
I dont know what to do and the office coukdnt advise me. Im looking at flying down to London to do it which is a huge hassle and expense. Has anyone any insider knowledge or tips. I really want to treat my girl after such a hard 2 years and celebrate her uni place. Finally I know this is my fault I somehow thought her passpirt was for 10yrs not 5.Thankyou in advance for your help xx

I applied for a passport recently online and I had the new one back within ten days. It's quicker online.

Hope things work out for you.

About eight weeks ago.

Try Belfast for an appointment- there’s generally plenty of slots available if you’re willing to make the trip.

Finfintytint · 07/04/2022 17:56

I applied for a renewal last month on line at ( in Scotland) and it took three weeks with regular updates. You may still be ok.

MadeForThis · 07/04/2022 17:56

Try flying to Belfast.

Coconut80 · 07/04/2022 18:31

Thankyou that all sounds encouraging. I was worried with covid that it would take far longer. I think rather than going to London or Belfast ill try renewing online. Thankyou everyone x

Honestly don't risk it with normal passport application. If your 3-4wks down the line and it isn't back you can't suddenly get an in person appointment as uv already started the process. I'd wait another couple of wks to see if more appointments released at Glasgow before going to london. Can you book the appointment for london and cancel it if u get one in Glasgow?

Ours recently took 4weeks and youngest daughter 5 weeks for first passport. However a friend also applied at the same time and she got them back 4-5 wks apart from hers that took 11wks. She ended up having to cancel their holiday and it was all very stressful, upsetting and an expensive lesson. The passport office were useless cldnt even tell her if it had been printed despite getting notification it had been sent. Then it literally showed up the day after she had cancelled the holiday.

I'm 6 weeks and counting online ...

Coconut80 · 07/04/2022 20:04

Oh God thats not good, the office were utterly useless unable to say if and when more slots in glasgow were being released even May dates. Im going to check at 8am tomorrow incase they release them or cancellations first thing. Im so stressed about the whole bloody thing and im raging at myself for not realising sooner. I just dont kniw what to do x

Did mine at the Digital Applications counter at the Post Office. It arrived about 7/8 days later.

I think it depends where your online application goes. From recent experience online renewals being processed in Liverpool seem to be moving fairly quickly, but have heard of other people who are being processed in Durham waiting ages. No idea how it's all allocated though so online could be pot luck.
Hope you get it sorted!

Iamnotamermaid · 07/04/2022 23:28

If it is a straightforward renewal probably worth just going online. It was a while ago but mine took about 10 days- it was remarkably quick. But post office digital applications probably your best bet right now.

A few years back my husband had to get his from Durham in person. Might they have appts? He trained it down and said it was easy to find. Durham is at least on the main London line so hopefully a few options for you from Glasgow/Edinburgh.

Coconut80 · 08/04/2022 20:38

Thankyou everyone for replying. This morning at 8am a slot for Glasgow on 26th April was released and i booked it. The appt costs £177 so a costly oversight on my part. So relieved that we can still go on holiday before she leaves for uni. Both mine will be away then and Im dreading the empty nest xxx
