What do you think the chances are of Christmas being cancelled?

We're meant to be travelling to visit the grandparents in Scotland - from England - for Christmas. DCs and GPs are so excited, they really missed each other while we were on lockdown.

But I'm getting nervous at the talk of "plan C".

What do you reckon, do I need to start making a Christmas back up plan in case it's all cancelled?

I wonder what the Scottish media are saying? Are they hinting at family gatherings at Christmas being cancelled?

I honestly don't know anyone who will go along with any restrictions unless forced, that is they were planning to go to the pub and it's shut.

If you are planning on visiting family mainly then I'd go ahead.

rookiemere · 10/12/2021 08:04

I'm getting worried, we're meant to have a full house of 12 for the day, all 9 visitors traveling up from England.
I'm on countdown, hoping once it gets to less than a week they wouldn't put in restrictions at that point.
I think it will be ok - not sure about our NYE party though!

43leftfeet · 10/12/2021 08:04

If they were just round the corner, totally with you on that!

But we're coming from hundreds of miles away and the GPs won't want us breaking the rules to do it, if the rules change.

Sorry, that was to ElephantOfRisk

Surely nobody will take a blind bit of notice after what has come to light this week 🤷🏼‍♀️

MLMshouldbeillegal · 10/12/2021 08:08

I don't think she'll dare. She'll just ramp up the po-faced "just because you can doesn't mean you should" bollocks and trundle out Jason Leitch and Humza Useless to spout about killing granny.

Which most of us will ignore.

Yes, I'm worried too!

We hadn't planned to have a Christmas tree or Christmas food here as we'll be up on Scotland for 2 weeks but I'm thinking maybe we should get a tree and at least have enough treats in the cupboard / freezer to be able to rustle up a last minute Christmas dinner - will there be a rush on Christmas food (and trees) if they announce restrictions and everyone needs to change their plans?

Our elderly relatives who are trying their best not to catch covid will be paying attention, yes.

ecceromani · 10/12/2021 08:14

Our hospital numbers are the lowest they've been in ages.
I think SG will be keeping a close eye on this over the next week. Couple days ago they said there was no-one with omicron in hospital.
At the moment there is no justification for changing anything.

They are really pushing LFTs before you meet up with anyone at the moment.
I don't think they will make people change Christmas plans again. They simply won't get away with that for another year running. Last year we were all waiting to get our vaccines but what would they be asking us to wait for this year.
Would be very unpopular and people wouldn't comply

willithappen · 10/12/2021 08:16

I personally won't be taking any notice and obviously only the things that are physically shut would affect me.
The government clearly aren't worried about spreading/passing it on and it doesn't apply to them so I'm done listening to them and the scare mongering news

Be sensible, take LFTs before going to see people, don't go if you feel ill but sure as hell don't stop seeing loved ones or living your life because the ones enforcing these rules are not sticking by them!!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 10/12/2021 08:17

I'd probably have a back up plan incase Scotland do introduce more restrictions, especially if your family won't want to break them!

My dc are going to Ireland to their dad's. It's a worry

HGC2 · 10/12/2021 08:19

I expect we will get the lecture on meeting up but in reality do think there will be a ban. I’m half expecting a circuit breaker in Jan though can’t see justification for it yet

rookiemere · 10/12/2021 08:20

@43leftfeet you could always buy a frozen turkey to be on the safe side, but I think it will be ok and shops are groaning with food atm.

Hotelhelp · 10/12/2021 08:23

Not a chance I’d follow anything

ApolloandDaphne · 10/12/2021 08:25

We are travelling from Scotland to England for Christmas. I don't think they will put in restrictions on Christmas just give advice on mitigation. After last year they know it was a very unpopular decision and with the shenanigans in Downing Street I can't see how anyone will take them seriously.

No, they're not. I wouldn't worry.
UniKittie · 10/12/2021 08:26

NS is expected to hold a televised briefing at some point today.

Enzbear · 10/12/2021 08:31

My cousin and family are traveling from Scotland to England. They're saying that they don't care what is said they are still coming.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 10/12/2021 08:49

@UniKittie

Queen Nicola holds a televised briefing as often as she can get away with. Shown on the BBC Scotland channel which nobody watches, everyone tunes int Bargain Hunt on BBC1 instead.

She's loving her reputation as ultra-cautious and playing that to the max. She was first with the vaccine passports (her and that numpty Drakeford), never ditched the masks, kept schools closed for much longer than England, never ditched the work from home recommendation, kept hospitality closed for longer.

And despite all of that, we're in exactly the same position as the rest of the UK.

It's all politicking bollocks. Most of us have stopped listening.

rookiemere · 10/12/2021 09:08

@MLMshouldbeillegal my English relatives used to love the Scottish daily briefings. I guess compared to Buffoon Boris, the ability to string a sentence together and appear to have a vaguely coherent policy must be a contrast.
Thing is all the grandstanding and different policies haven't worked. Scotland had a peak of cases despite masks and now England has similar. I'd have had more respect if she'd banned COP26 as the super spready event it was always going to be, but no Kudos and climate change, so there we go.

aquamarine1 · 10/12/2021 09:13

Couldn't agree more @MLMshouldbeillegal - how anyone is still buying this nonsense when our figures are the same as - or worse - than less restricted countries is beyond me.

Callisto1 · 10/12/2021 10:08

I really can't see anyone cancelling Christmas at this point. The Covid situation is not that bad. The predictions for Omicron seem to suggest that it if it becomes a problem it will be in January. So I think we will be ok to travel for Christmas.

Plan C is always a good idea though since you can always be hit with Covid and have to isolate Sad.

We are also planning to travel to celebrate with family in England and haven't got food or a tree and I'm starting to think I should get stuff just in case. It's such a mess!

Callisto1 · 10/12/2021 10:14

Sorry I meant to prepare for a plan C is a good idea! Not had enough coffee yet! 🤦🏻‍♀️

RaspberryRoyale88 · 10/12/2021 10:32

I think Sturgeon would love to lock us up for Christmas. But seeing as she doesn’t follow her own rules I couldn’t care less what she has to say as I’m not complying. Enough is enough.
