Hello all,

My name is Sylwia and I recently have got guardianship over my little sister Vicki (age 13).
Vicki is very clever and is finding school a little too easy, I'd like to get her involved into afterschool activities, we made a deal she'll try stuff out, but I do not know where to find such things.
Hence why I'm here looking for help!

Please recommend any clubs or activities I could get her into.
I'd like to explore things like:

  • Volunteering
  • Language school
  • STEM related clubs; coding, technology, robotics and such.
  • Theatre clubs
  • Music related things
  • Part time jobs for teens ?
  • Martial arts

Any help will be much appreciated. I've been searching the web but sadly with no luck as I think my google thinks I'm looking for things to do for myself and I'm 25 so the things I'm finding are wildly unsuitable.

Please recommend portals, fb pages, twitter accounts or Instagram accounts you follow or that might help me find stuff to enrol my sister on.

I'm looking forward to your replies and thank you very much in advance for any recommendations.

All the best
Sylwia

Both Glasgow School of Art and the Conservatoire have a good range of programmes and activities for teens. I think there is also financial assistance if you qualify.

Scouts?

there will be many different groups in Glasgow, this should help you find your local one:

Coderdojo?

My DSs were involved in this (not the Glasgow one) and my 21 year old now volunteers with the local club

There are often things listed on Eventbrite that you can book to go along to. Some are one-off type things but a lot of groups use it for bookings as well

If you used your real names, ask MN to remove them.

There are lots of clubs in Glasgow. It depends which part you're in. Glasgow Acting Academy; Stagecoach for drama and musical theatre.

Tae Kwon Do for martial arts. Again, lots of different locations across the city.

If you join your local FB page, they'll have good suggestions for activities close to you.

She'd be more than welcome to volunteer (and take part) in parkrun, a lot of teenagers volunteer for their Duke of Edinburgh awards. There's several in Glasgow www.parkrun.org.uk/events/events/#geo=4.73/55.05/-2.95

I know it's not on your list but Girls Rugby may offer similar skills to Martial Arts and the advantage of a team sport. Don't know if you're north side or south side but Cartha QP Rugby Club (Southside) has an active Girls section (U14, U16, U18 teams). Hillhead Jordanhill (Northside) used to be really strong but I believe they're currently having a problem with numbers.
