Hi all
I’m planning on moving home to Scotland. I have a job offer in Wishaw (9-5 job) & we want to live in Southside or West end. Apple maps says its a 30-35 mins journey from either starting point. My Dad thinks it’ll be much longer - please can you advise me?

Do you mean driving?

BroccoliFloret · 01/09/2021 12:31

Why does your Dad think it'll take longer?

You will be, for the most part, commuting against the traffic. Everyone else is going into Glasgow and you're going out.

Yes driving. My Dad retired from shipyards in Govan about 10 years ago and commuted from uddingston. He recalls terrible traffic even in shifts
I wonder if new part of m74 makes a difference

My dh goes in the opposite direction. You are at least going against most of the traffic that will be heading into Glasgow

thedevilinablackdress · 01/09/2021 12:54

I wouldn't say much longer. Usually 40 mins IME. As PP mentioned, you're going the opposite way from the majority of the traffic.

And yes, the M74 extension definitely helps.

Depends where in Wishaw you're going. You're mostly going against the traffic: the M74 has made a a big difference. It can clog up a bit at the M73/M74 junction as some of the traffic will be going to the M8/M80 and at the Strathclyde Business Park junction (although they've massively improved it recently).

I'd say it's so-able. Probably better South Side than West End as it's easier access onto the M74.

Ladylunchalot · 01/09/2021 13:56

M74 is normally pretty decent until you hit the Motherwell/Hamilton cutoff and then it's pretty busy. Traffic through Motherwell won't be too bad but you'll still have school run traffic too. M8 is ok too, depends on where abouts in Wishaw you'll be working as to which route would be best.
M8 if you're in the West end, M74 if you're in the southside.

Thanks everyone. Job is near Wishaw General Hospital

Traffic can be bad round there. Once you get to wishaw you might not be able to escape as they throw up roadworks everywhere 😆. For the hospital you'd likely be better coming in from the motherwell end

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 01/09/2021 17:48

The motorway (m74) might be fine it’s more going through Motherwell up to wishaw I find can be v v slow & I’m travelling earlier than you would be (drive from stirling) lots of school traffic and same the other end of the day it’s just slow all ways in/out of wishaw, it’s UhW these days though not that anyone remembers 😂 I think 50 mins in a morning and if You can do it faster that’s good

Tataru · 01/09/2021 17:53

Just check it on Google Maps around the times you will be travelling. It updates traffic conditions etc.

Take the M8 come off at Newhouse and through ravenscraig so much quicker in rush hour!

Great tip. Thank you all!
