Glasgow academy or High School of Glasgow?

My eldest has applied to both the Glasgow Academy and The High School of Glasgow for s1 entry.

I don’t know anyone with kids at these schools to work out which is best. Both have sold themselves to us particularly well and both have redeeming features.

We’ve been unable to do in person visits thanks to covid so we couldn’t get a feel for the place.

Can anyone share their stories/experiences of either school? What their strengths and weaknesses are?

Thank you.

On paper they are very similar. I have friends with DC at both and who went to them. They are both pretty transparent about what they offer and who they are most likely to suit. If it were me I would go with the one you and your DC like better / perceive to be a better fit.

Thank you. They both seem fantastic schools
But it’s really hard not having been able to visit either in person.

I don't know anything about them in person but have a child at another Glasgow independent school.
I have only heard good thing's about the High School apart from one complaint that they are "obsessed with rugby" that was in junior school.
There does seem to be a "Bearsden Mums" group at the high school and a "west end" group at the Academy.
My husband thinks Academy kids are "nice kids" !
Where are you travelling from? Does that have any influence?
I don't think SN provision is good at either school and one friend has just moved to Kelvinside for that reason.
Choral music seems good at the High School at the moment. Academically I think they are much of a muchness with St Aloysius. You have to choose on other criteria.

Name changed, but I’m a regular poster not on commission...!

I could not recommend the Academy any more - IMO they’ve been absolutely remarkable throughout this entire ordeal and we were delighted with them before that anyway. Admittedly this is primary level but have heard similar reports further up the school. Also really like Mr Pearce and his ethos.

You can’t really go wrong but for me Academy has the edge.

Although I agree with PP that Kelvinside has a reputation for great additional support needs provision if that’s in any way relevant.
