Where will they 'take back' the extra days off school?

We were due back to school on the 6th, but obviously term isn't starting until the 11th (for pupils at least).

I assume they'll need to 'add on' these few days to the school timetable somewhere before the summer? Does anyone have any inside knowledge as to when that might be?

I'm hoping to book a short (UK) break either at Easter or the start of summer holidays, just for something to count down for. Obviously I know it might not happen, but need something to clutch to.

*Apologies if that came across as facetious, was just thinking that due to UFT, it will be interesting the next time we have snow days in Scotland.

Lidlfix · 31/12/2020 20:16

No catch up days from 2010 Snowmaggadon. No catch up in Beast from the East . There is is an appointed quantity of days for teachers but exceptional circumstances always trumps that. Some schools get used for polling others don't teachers are still in. Book your holiday and hope everything is okay by then. I am still fuming that I had to go back a week early ( when we could have had a few nights away ,gone to restaurants and even pubs) to get a week back in October when where I live was put in a short sharp 3 week shutdown and never came out Angry.

Lidlfix · 31/12/2020 20:16

Dolly mixture hurricane Bawbag we did!

Outsidemum1 · 31/12/2020 20:21

@DollyMixtureLulus

Teachers with a better memory than me- was it a week we were shut for last time due to snow? I do remember catching up on o/s work but no home learning of any kind.

No, or not in the central belt anyway. During the Beast from the East we closed on Tuesday pm and missed the Weds, Thurs and Fri. No catchup days as far as I can remember. I had the class from hell that year.

Did we not also close the day it was windy?

Ah thanks, yes I think you're right. Re the windy day- it wasn't even that windy. Well, not for someone used to NE Scotland anyway!
applesandpears33 · 31/12/2020 20:23

Not a teacher, just a parent but yes, I remember a closure on the day there was a red weather warning for wind.

In Edinburgh children are losing out on 2.5 days of education. I am a little fed up because I have a child in an exam year and feel that with all of the disruption this year it is important the young people sitting exams get as much education as possible. I am not so bothered about our other DC as they are not in exam years. I am just keeping my fingers crossed they all go back on the 18th.

Outsidemum1 · 31/12/2020 20:24

Hurricane bawbag, of course Grin

DollyMixtureLulus · 31/12/2020 20:27

Hurricane bawbag Grin was that that day?! That was my probation year I think.

Hopefully we ride out the Christmas/NY spike and the extra week means as few children as possible need to self isolate afterwards.

mondaywine · 31/12/2020 20:57

Some children will be missing days next week but not all. We will be back on the 6th with children in school from the 7th. Online learning starts from the 11th.
@Callisto1 they've obviously changed it back to the 2nd of July as it was the 25th June. They haven't told staff of this change.
Still says 25th June when I looked it up just now. They have it in several formats don't they so maybe have changed some and not all the calendars? The end of term will be 25th, they are not about to pay all school staff for returning a week early in August!

ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas · 31/12/2020 21:16

Applesandpears you do know they aren't sitting exams this year..?
There will be enough time for internal assessment, and the SQA haven't released the requirements for higher yet anyway.

applesandpears33 · 31/12/2020 21:23

Not sitting exams this year but there has been quite a lot of disruption so far and it isn't great that they are losing more education. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed the kids get to go back on the 18th and that there is no blended learning.

Groovee · 31/12/2020 21:34

This is the one we usually put on the wall on the notice board. Yet the first page says the 25th. Hopefully they will sort it out as the one we have on the wall says the 25th so whoever updated the photo must have updated to the 2nd July.

Where will they 'take back' the extra days off school?
ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas · 31/12/2020 22:03

Applesandpears it will be worse with more practical subjects, but with a literacy based one I can give your dc more feedback and tailored support online than I can in the classroom at the moment.
Groovee I will enquire next week, though it will annoy me till then (don't think anyone at the council is around to answer emails on NYE Grin)

applesandpears33 · 31/12/2020 22:13

The worst subject is maths. In June I saw my DC stare at the work with no idea how what to do with it. The annotated powerpoints helped a little, but not much. Real life interaction with a teacher was what was required.

Callisto1 · 31/12/2020 22:34

Maybe the dates on the Edinburgh council website are wrong or old. But they have the January closures penned in for the calendar part so I thought it was an update 🤷🏻‍♀️

Groovee · 01/01/2021 06:24

I'll post it to the teams chat on Sunday and see if anyone is aware.

WankmasterBastardDeLaShithead · 01/01/2021 08:29

Oh God, I know it might be unrealistic anyway, but we booked our summer holiday based on the end of term being 25th June! There's conflicting info now on the Edinburgh council website (some saying 25th June, some saying 2nd July). FFS! This isn't just a pandemic thing either - they've randomly changed the dates for other holidays in previous years. And they don't even flag up the changes with an email! Do they not realise that people actually make plans based on their shit info?

Groovee · 01/01/2021 10:50

@WankmasterBastardDeLaShithead I reckon someone was given the task of updating the holidays and got given mixed info.

I know going back early for some of my colleagues was hard but knowing they finished in June helped. Falkirk gave the extra week in October.

WankmasterBastardDeLaShithead · 01/01/2021 10:58

It just seems like such a basic thing to get right! I'm in a bad mood already and 2021 has only just started Grin

RaspberryCoulis · 01/01/2021 11:01

Not in Edinburgh, but our Council website still says "last day of school - Thursday 24th June".

We always take the opportunity to go away as soon as schools break up and before the prices rise at the end of July for the English holidays. We aren't going abroad in 2021, but we have booked a house in Dorset for 10 days from 26th June. We will be going, even if it does mean hoiking the kids out of school.

ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas · 01/01/2021 14:20

Me too Raspberry Smile They can stick a cardboard cut out of me in front of the class if they want but I will be elsewhere Grin

RaraRachael · 02/01/2021 20:36

We are in school and working from the 5th which was our original date for returning so no extra "days off" need to made up. Pupils might not be going back until the 11th but staff are not getting any extra days off Hmm

DumplingsAndStew · 03/01/2021 15:07

@RaraRachael

Was there really any need for the passive aggressive Hmm emoji? Did you even read my posts, or just think your viewpoint was so important it just had to be shared?

To be fair OP, you felt your question was so important that you had to start a thread about it Hmm

Wtf?

That's how questions generally work.

The PP gave a passive aggressive response to something I had already stated i was aware of.
