Park and ride for Royal Infirmary Edinburgh

I’m confused... is Sheriffhall the same as Shawfair?
I took a run up there to find Sheriffhall and found Shawfair park and ride instead.
Is parking within the hospital a nightmare?
Any info. gratefully received thanks!

I used to visit my mum regularly and always managed to park but that was at the weekend. There is a park and ride fairly close to the hospital that's sheriffhall. Shawfair is further away. Google maps should sort you out.

Park at the hospital there are lots of spaces atm and it's free during the pandemic

Rainyautumn345 · 17/11/2020 09:42

ImperfectTents- is there any particular car park I should use? Thanks
Also- I put Sheriffhall into my phone and it took me to Shawfair! How far a walk is Sheriffhall if worst comes to worst? Thanks!

Thinks its about a 5 minute drive so would be a fair walk.

When we went in we always headed to the right when you get in front of the main entrance - that was a smaller area but we never had any bother getting a space but as I say, it was the weekend and a couple years ago. I wasn't sure if it might be quieter nowadays so that's good news from @ImperfectTents who might have better ideas about the best bit to go to.

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/11/2020 09:58

There is a lot of traffic movement also so lots coming and going so probably not long to wait if you had to, doesn't sound like that is the case. I was only ever in the main bit so I know there are bits that might be more or less convenient depending which bit you need to get to.

There's a map of the park & ride car parks on the council website although Shawfair doesn't feature although I'm wondering if Sherriffhall has been renamed? It's also called Sherriffhall on google maps. Anyway, there's a postcode on the council website that takes you to Old Dalkeith Road so that's the one you need.
If you're going to the hospital on your own and decide to park there then I would arrive with plenty of time to find a space, I once went to an outpatients appointment and it was a "one out, one in" situation. I also found some of the signage very ambiguous as to what was staff or patient parking (or maybe mixed??).

Any of the car parks at the hospital will do . Which bit are you visiting?

GreyishDays · 17/11/2020 13:21

There are also lots of buses that go there if just getting a bus would be easier?

ImperfectTents · 17/11/2020 13:24

Neither shawfair nor sheriff hall make any sense when you could just part at the hospital

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/11/2020 13:27

I agree, I'd aim for the hospital and allow enough time. I think even if it's busy, you'd still be quicker waiting on a space than farting about with park and ride. Imperfect obviously has recent experience so I'd expect there to be no issue on that basis.

Er, Shawfair is the name of the Park and Ride before you get to Sherrifhall roundabout, it's about a quarter mile before. If you are coming from RIE you will pass the SQA building on your left just before Shawfair roundabout.
If you are going for treatment or visit you should be able to park at the hospital itself and parking charges are waived at the moment.

DrWAnkenstein · 17/11/2020 13:32

There also seemed to be a lot of parking attendants around when I was there around 2 weeks ago, they were very helpful.

DrWAnkenstein · 17/11/2020 13:33

There was plenty of parking but I was there around 10am.

GreyishDays · 17/11/2020 13:51

Aha. If you go to Sheriffhall park and ride, the roundabout is labelled as Shawfair! The red pin there.

Shawfair is a train station a bit up the road.

Hope that clears that bit up a bit.

Yes what is marked on the map that GreyishDays shows marked as Sherrifhall P&R is aka Shawfair P&R.

DrWAnkenstein · 17/11/2020 14:16

But Sherrifhall and Shawfair roundabouts are 2 distinct entities!

Groovee · 17/11/2020 17:38

I've found parking fairly straightforward at the royal. The parking attendants direct you too.

Rainyautumn345 · 17/11/2020 19:22

Thanks for the responses. I took a run up there again and it looks like Sheriffhall and Shawfair park and ride are the same thing!
I agree with those who said try parking. It’s just that someone said to me that parking there is a nightmare but I guess at this time it might be ok
Appreciate all the info. and adviceSmile

That whole area is now called Shawfair, so they are the same thing.
But parking is easier at the hospital now because there are fewer visitors so you should be fine.

Rainyautumn345 · 18/11/2020 09:05

Thanks Rae
